Being a wealthy city resident, the entrepreneur is involved in many social projects to improve the urban environment. The billionaire’s dream is to turn Krasnodar into a garden city in which its residents will feel comfortable.
Interview with Sergei Gallitsky
Now Sergei Galitsky is developing the Krasnodar football club. In 2020, a significant event for FC was the termination of the contract with Pavel Mamaev, who was released from prison. Galitsky commented on this decision by saying that a football player who receives a lot of money and is a role model for young people does not have the right to rash aggressive actions.
Biography of Galitsky, former owner of Magnit
If there are such children who can be called businessmen, then Sergei definitely belonged to this category. Even in early childhood, he could make good money selling nuts, chestnuts and hazelnuts. As a child, he already understood that entrepreneurship is impossible without partnership and a client base, so he attracted as many friends as possible during the nut-picking season, and then sold his goods and negotiated with buyers about future purchases. This approach has made what Galitsky owns now so expensive and popular.
In the video you can see the biography of Sergei Galitsky
Galitsky’s business has grown from scratch, and this alone makes his biography extremely interesting. Sergey Galitsky (Harutyunyan) grew up in the picturesque village of Lazarevskoye, which is located in Sochi and is now a resort. Despite the fact that the father of the future dollar billionaire is a native of Armenia, Sergei always considered himself 80 percent Russian and only 20 percent Armenian. The Harutyunyan family was not rich, however, they always found funds for the development of their children.
At school, the future Galitsky was not particularly diligent. Obviously, a schoolboy with an innate entrepreneurial spirit could study better, but did not want to. In the first grade, Galitsky became interested in football. He could kick the ball in the yard for hours, and was always the last one to leave the section.
But at 14, to the surprise of his parents, along with football, Sergei became seriously interested in chess. And in just a couple of years he will fulfill the Master of Sports standard for this game. By the way, in many interviews, the owner of Magnit says that it was his passion for chess that shaped his unconventional thinking, which helped him create a multibillion-dollar business in retail trade.
Becoming a businessman
After school, the entrepreneur repaid his debt to his homeland by serving 2 years in the army. And immediately after demobilization, he entered the economics department of Kuban State University.
During his first 2 years of study, Galitsky works part-time as a loader and doesn’t even dream of owning a personal plane. But already on the third day, the entrepreneur writes an analytical article for the Finance and Credit magazine. It was a great success and provided the student with a great job. One of the managers of a commercial bank contacted Galitsky and offered him a job as a credit department manager. However, Sergei worked there for only 12 months, after which he called the bank a “money changer” and was just that.
Do you think the experience of a loader was important in becoming a billionaire?
Sergey Galitsky - founder of Magnit: biography
Today, many have heard about the richest entrepreneur and know who he is. The famous Russian businessman Sergei Harutyunyan (his real name) was born on August 14, 1967, and lived in the village of Lazarevskoye as a child. His parents like to tell how their very young son sought to earn money by selling hazelnuts.
After receiving the certificate, he served in the army for two years, and then entered Kuban University, Faculty of Economics. The purposeful student was quickly noticed; in his 3rd year he began working as a deputy manager of one of the banks. Sergei held this position until graduation. Then he left, saying that there were no prospects here. Read Will Smith's biography.
At the age of 27, he created and began supplying cosmetics for the Johnson & Johnson and Avon brands.
A strong grip and prudence helped the businessman promote his brainchild, and a year later he founded. After some time, Magnit chain stores appeared in many Russian cities and quickly became popular due to reduced prices.
Why did Galitsky take his wife's surname?
After the marriage, the businessman switched to his wife’s surname. As it turned out, on the initiative of a demanding father-in-law. The man said that he would not allow his daughter and future grandchildren to bear an Armenian surname.
But another version is being voiced. Journalists wrote that the surname Galitsky is a princely one. Therefore, the future oligarch decided to take her.
Family
In 1995, the couple had their only daughter, Polina. The girl received a gymnasium certificate and entered the Kuban University faculty where her father studied. Last year, she took 5th place among the richest heirs of famous Russian oligarchs with a fortune of about $5.7 billion. She is familiar with Evelina Leonidovna Khromchenko, her husband and children.
Sergei is against his daughter continuing his work and running a business. According to him, the main thing for a woman is family and children, and not an entrepreneurial career. The girl has not yet commented on her father’s decision. Facts about the personal life of Anastasia Chernobrovina.
Galitsky and his wife raised Polina harshly, believing that excessive softness could cause harm. The businessman often said that he was proud of his daughter. She grew up not spoiled and very well read.
How Galitsky's billion-dollar business was built
Galitsky's fortune currently amounts to several billion dollars, but this was not always the case. Although Sergei often says in interviews that he has been preparing to build his own business almost since childhood.
Before graduating from university, the future dollar billionaire created a company that transported and sold cosmetics, including Avon and P&G. On the advice of a friend, the future owner of Magnit took out a loan from the bank for $300,000, purchased a batch of cosmetics and began small sales.
A year later, she became the official distributor of cosmetic brands, the sales of which she was engaged in and had a turnover of $200,000. And Sergey Galitsky, whose fortune had increased significantly by that time, decided to transfer the company to his partners and try his hand at the food business.
The birth of Magnit
Competition with giant grocery stores was not initially part of the entrepreneur’s plans. In 1995, Galitsky founded and slowly opened small retail stores in provincial towns with the name “Magnit,” which in commercial translation meant “Low Tariff Stores.”
- By the end of 2001, the chain of grocery stores already included more than 260 facilities throughout Russia, and the business had an annual turnover of $879,000,000;
- in 2003, the chain already had more than 470 stores and a total turnover of more than $1.5 billion, surpassing its closest competitors Dixie and Pyaterochka in all respects;
- in 2007, most of the company's stores received the status of hypermarkets, expanded their assortment and began to bring double profits to the businessman. The annual turnover of all points exceeds $6 billion;
- in 2012 Galitsky is getting closer to his plane. By this year, the company already includes just over 1,000 food stores and about 500 cosmetics outlets. The total turnover of all objects exceeded $10 billion for the first time;
- in 2020, a wealthy Armenian could boast a turnover of almost $16 billion and entered the “Top of the most successful innovative projects.” In the same year, Galitsky firmly decided to purchase a private jet.

Family of Sergei Galitsky
Not much is known about the businessman’s family. His father is Armenian by nationality, and his mother is Russian. Since childhood we lived in a small village. After graduating from university, the future billionaire married Victoria Galitskaya, whose last name he took for himself. There is a daughter - Polina Galitskaya.
Sergey Galitsky-Harutyunyan is known as an exemplary family man who spends all his free time on family and friends. It is known that he helps many relatives not only financially, but also in matters of education.
Wife Victoria
Today, the entrepreneur is one of the twenty richest people in the country, whose wealth is constantly increasing. Numerous crises, recessions and problems did not affect Sergei Galitsky’s ability to earn money and achieve goals.
Graduated from Kuban State University, Faculty of Economics, majoring in finance and credit.
How else does Sergei Galitsky earn money?
While Galitsky’s plane was still just in the plans, the business was firmly moving towards the set goal, increasing the businessman’s income year after year. Really, owning such a huge food supply, does he have time to do anything else, you ask? Surprisingly, yes. Galitsky managed to earn a fortune of $3.5 billion not only through retail trade. What Galitsky currently owns:
- 56% of the shares, including a controlling stake, belonged to an enterprising Armenian. That is, Sergei transfers most of Magnit’s income to his personal account. The remaining share is divided between partners and investors.
- Sergei founded the PR agency Art Side, which is based in his small homeland. The agency is engaged in the placement and creation of outdoor advertising, promotion of companies and other similar matters. Galitsky’s average annual earnings from this business are 18,000,000 rubles. Not much for an airplane, but enough for refueling.
- Galitsky, together with his partners, opened several hotels and restaurants throughout the Krasnodar Territory, as well as directly in Krasnodar. It accounts for approximately a quarter of all profits. For example, in 2020 Sergey earned about 387,000,000 rubles.
- Several years ago, the former Harutyunyan joined the board of the founding meeting of VTB Bank. It is known that each of its members has a small share of stock in a financial company. Their size changes annually and depends on many factors.
In the video you can find out why Galitsky sold the Magnit chain of stores.
Sergey Galitsky: man-magnet
Sergei Galitsky: a man-magnet
The famous oligarch and football fan Sergei Galitsky recently made history when in one of his Magnit stores, service personnel treated an 81-year-old visitor inappropriately. Russia was shocked by this situation. But it is wrong to portray Galitsky in a dark light. If all our businessmen were like this, we would now live in a completely different country.
FOR THREE PACKS OF BUTTER - TO THE POLICE
A terrible story happened in the food empire of Sergei Galitsky. At the Magnit store in Kronstadt, security detained 81-year-old blockade survivor Rauza Galimova at the cash register, accusing her of stealing three packs of butter. The pensioner was taken to the police station, where she became ill. The arriving ambulance doctors were unable to help her. My grandmother died of acute heart failure.
And now the public has agreed that Galitsky is to blame for everything.
People on the Internet are going crazy. But there is a reason to talk about who Sergei Galitsky is, a man from Forbes magazine “200 richest businessmen in Russia” with a fortune of 8.2 billion US dollars.
“I’VE NEVER BEEN A ASSHOLE”
Sergey was born on August 14, 1967 in the village of Lazarevskoye, Krasnodar Territory. As a child I was fond of football, but at the age of 14 I realized that I would not achieve great success.
...But in the seventh grade he became interested in chess, and two years later he became a candidate master of sports and the champion of Sochi. As he admitted, it was chess that helped him learn logical thinking.
“And my father also forced me to work. He was an ordinary person, but had a great work ethic. I have seen few such people in my life. Like all seaside boys, I collected hazelnuts and sold them. People lived hard back then. In the seventh grade I worked as a loader. Every year in the summer they unloaded Pepsi-Cola. I wasn't a nerd at school. But also an asshole. I studied without C grades.”
Military service, demobilization. Admission to Kuban State University with a degree in finance and credit. Already in his second year he began working in a commercial bank in Krasnodar. And no one knew that Sergei would make an outstanding businessman. The owner of that bank found out that he had such an employee only after reading his interview in a financial magazine.
TAKE WIFE'S LAST NAME
The real name of our hero is Harutyunyan. Sergei Nikolaevich replaced her when he married Victoria Galitskaya. The bride's father insisted on this, declaring that neither his daughter nor his grandchildren would ever bear an Armenian surname.
In general, Sergei met his wife at the university, they studied at parallel courses. The girl wanted to become an accountant. Now they have a daughter, Polina (born 1995).
While still in his third year, Sergei wrote an article on the topic of liquidity and sent it to the Finance and Credit magazine. The texture and argument turned out to be very professional, and the material was published. The banking structures of his native Kuban were impressed, and student Harutyunyan was invited for an interview at one of the commercial banks. And just imagine, the guy worked part-time as a loader, and then immediately became a deputy manager.
But that's not all! Having already graduated from the university, Sergei wrote a letter of resignation of his own free will. He was not satisfied with the prospects for the development of the bank, which he later compared to a “small money changer.”
No, the soul demanded scope.
IT ALL STARTED WITH PERFUMERY
First, he took out a loan of 30 thousand US dollars, bought Johnson & Johnson products with all the money and sold them in small wholesale. Then, together with three classmates, he created his own. There was a shortage of supplies to the market—household chemicals, cosmetics, and perfumes. At first, not everything worked out: “We were balancing between small profits and a real abyss.” But six months later, foreign suppliers began to rely on young partners. For example, Procter & Gamble gave the right to become its main distributor in the Southern region.
Later, Sergei switched to another business - food. Whether it’s a crisis or a time of grace, people always want to eat.
The first store of the Magnit chain was opened in Krasnodar in 1998. With the prudence of a chess player, he developed the network, avoiding great risk. And now Magnit has 5,500 retail outlets and more than a hundred hypermarkets throughout the country. Galitsky also acquired a hotel in Krasnodar, an advertising agency, and created some other projects. They do not bring much profit, and Sergei considers this his hobby.
But there is real passion. This is football.
“MY GOAL IS TO BEAT THE GAS PIPE”
Galitsky owns the Krasnodar club, which is currently in fourth place in the Russian Premier League and plays in European competition. The best dispatcher in the country, Roman Shirokov, plays for this team. Sergei also runs a Twitter account with 82 thousand subscribers, and with his short messages he often blows up the sports world.
“I will not take part in match-fixing. But if they bribe, say, a goalkeeper, why should I leave the club? This is nonsense. The topic is overblown. Journalists need scandals. I think 95% of Premier League games are played fairly."
“My goal is to beat the gas pipe.” You know, if I said so, it was disrespectful towards Zenit. In the heat of the moment he could have blurted out. But the point is that beating a strong opponent is what sport is all about. We haven’t won against Zenit yet, but we’ve won against Spartak a couple of times already.”
“Now I’m thinking about building a scheme so that after my death the team can be financed. So that the club does not get stolen. There are mechanisms that allow you to have large deposits.”
FERRARI IS A DISGUSTING CAR
- Which player is stronger - Shirokov or Fabregas?
- You are waiting for an answer from me: Shirokov. I'll say so. I must shock.
This is all Galitsky.
Or here's the dialogue.
— The dream of ordinary people is about a yacht, about an airplane... But walking on land is better than sitting on a yacht. Firstly, the humidity there is high. Secondly, the Mediterranean Sea is salty.
— Do you have a Ferrari?
- Lord, I had a Ferrari. I bought it five years ago and need to sell it. I haven't driven it for two years now. It's a disgusting car - very hard and hard to drive.
— Did you buy it by chance?
- Why? It was a meaningful step. I tried it and realized it wasn’t for me.
...What is Galitsky’s uniqueness? The fact is that he made his capital not from raw materials. As a child, he was not friends with the country's top leadership. He doesn’t have a rich dad who would put him in the right position and give him the starting car of money. He is not an official who moved to a state-owned company with a salary of $50 million a year.
Galitsky achieved everything himself - with his own work and head.
And now he is being bullied on the Internet.
Here's how Galitsky himself reacted to the scandal:
“We have a rule - if someone steals something, we call the police. The store director acted strictly according to instructions. The police arrived and took the grandmother away. But in this case, it was not worth doing this to a woman who survived the blockade. I was quite old, I could have done without the police.”
And TV presenter Vladimir Solovyov said correctly: “People are obstructing Sergei Galitsky instead of thinking about how to help poor old women.”

10 BRIGHTEST QUOTES BY SERGEY GALITSKY
- Why diversify your business at all? If you have a good forehand, what's the point of switching to other shots? Hit the right hand when given the opportunity! What I mean is that we have incredible opportunities to open new stores. Why do we need to invent anything else?
- A businessman should not be afraid. It's like in football: if when the score is 1:0 you start playing to keep the score, you will definitely get it. You shouldn't wake up afraid of losing your business.
- Russia is a specifically structured country. There are a handful of entrepreneurs who have ruined the very reputation of the business. These are bandits who had the opportunity to negotiate with the authorities and cut down Soviet assets. Now people see businessmen as thieves, scoundrels, and scum. And this is insulting to me, who works seven days a week.
- If a manager works hard, his subordinates will work the same.
- There is no ideal country for business. Where there are good conditions, there are no opportunities. Where there are many opportunities, conditions are a problem. This is normal, it doesn’t happen that everything is great everywhere.
- I like making money. First of all, I am a man. I have to earn money. I don’t owe it to anyone, but nature created me this way. Secondly, everyone likes to do what they can do. Third, I have some goals. For example, having the best children's football school in Russia.
- I will never get involved in politics for one simple reason - I am vulnerable. I have property. Only when you have money in a Swiss account that no one knows about can you go out and scratch your tongue.
- If I ask my employees to work hard, I work hard myself. But if I do yoga, forcing my employees to do yoga is a disgrace.
- I don’t think there should be any kind of schedule - you work for five days, then rest. You need to rest when you are tired. If I'm tired, I can rest on a working day. It doesn't matter if it's Saturday or Tuesday.
- I read practically nothing. I read a lot at school. What do you want to read from the book? Other people's success? For what? I'm against business schools. It's disgusting. They produce broilers, standardized people with the same thinking. No, no, middle school, high school, and then - knowledge of the world. What could be a more interesting book than living life?
Why did the Krasnodar businessman sell Magnit?
It would seem that there is a gold mine, a tidbit in the form of a chain of food and cosmetic stores, live, manage and be happy. But apparently, not everything is so smooth, since the entrepreneur decided to sell his brainchild to VTB Bank for 486,000,000,000 rubles ($7.79 billion). So why did Galitsky sell Magnit? There were 3 big reasons for this:
- The businessman’s best friend and right-hand man, Vladimir Gordeychuk, lost his post in the company. He was in the company almost from the very beginning, he knew everything just like Galitsky, but due to personal problems he was fired. For a long time, the entrepreneur could not find a replacement for his valuable employee.
- Sergei Viktorovich is simply tired of managing such a huge company around the clock. First, he appointed another general in the person of Alexander Barsukov along with himself. He failed, and the management of the empire began to be of a collective nature.
- Unpromising triarchy. While Galitsky faded into the background and devoted all his time to FC Krasnodar, 3 directors competed for the status of the best manager. As a result, the average sales and average check fell.

It's time to change something in your life. It was a good time. It was not an easy decision. I founded this company. But nothing lasts forever. The impetus was that investors do not see the future quite the same way as the founder. I shouldn't stand in the way of the process, if investors want changes, they should get them
- said Galitsky[16]
What does a billionaire own?
Big incomes mean big expenses, and Sergey knows this better than anyone else. According to analytical agencies, Sergei owns the following types of property:
- Galitsky’s motor yacht called “Quantum blue” reaches more than 100 meters in length and more than 160 meters in width. The luxurious vessel ranks second in the top most expensive yachts of Russian businessmen and is estimated at 140 million euros. Its annual maintenance, depending on the frequency of use, can exceed 5 million euros;
- Galitsky’s plane, the photo of which has already spread all over the domestic and European media, cost the owner $70.7 million. This is a stunningly beautiful business jet, on which Galitsky also plans to make money. It is designed for private luxury flights. The plane is in demand among Russian businessmen and politicians, so even if you have a lot of money, you will still have to stand in line. Galitsky himself does not fly often;
- football club "Krasnodar". You may not have known about this, but Krasnodar made it to the first division, acquired a luxurious stadium and is aiming for the Euroleague solely through the efforts of the Krasnodar tycoon. He loved football since childhood, but never dreamed of having his own team. However, life has developed in such a way that now Galitsky is the heart, brain, soul and money of FC Krasnodar. According to the most conservative estimates, over the past 5 years Sergei has invested more than $300,000,000 in the club.

Galitsky about money and business
Sergei never hid that all his life he strived for big money and the purchase of not only a personal plane. It’s just that at the beginning of my journey I didn’t very clearly understand which path to choose. Jokingly or not, Galitsky said many times in interviews that he has the goal of leading not only the Russian, but also the global Forbes list. And to the question of how an ordinary person can build a profitable business, the entrepreneur answers clearly:
“Never compromise with anyone.”
The businessman also intends to spend all the money during his lifetime.
The beginning of the way
Sergey Nikolaevich Galitsky is a native of the warm and hospitable Krasnodar region.
It is not for nothing that he calls his native land the best place to live in Russia and does not plan to leave them, exchanging it for the elite Rublyovka or foreign capitals. The future businessman was born on August 14, 1967 in the resort village of Lazarevskoye. His father, like Sergei himself until a certain point, bore the surname Harutyunyan. When asked about his nationality, Galitsky replies that he is a quarter Armenian, and the rest is of Russian blood. He is proud of his mixed heritage. True, he cannot even boast of knowledge of the Armenian language. The billionaire remembers his childhood as a series of everyday work. He had almost no holidays. At first I played football intensively, then switched to chess. Already in the ninth grade, Sergei won the title of Sochi chess champion. By his own admission, at school the young man did not have high grades or outstanding knowledge. Now Galitsky is firmly convinced that intelligence can be developed and raised into a talented businessman from any child.
So, after school, he served two years in the army and in 1988 entered Kuban State University at the Faculty of Economics. He began his working career while still studying at the institute. He was helped in this by an article on the topic of liquidity, which the student sent to the Finance and Credit magazine. After the publication of this work, one of the private Krasnodar banks became interested in Sergei Nikolaevich and offered him a job.
In 1993, the future businessman received a diploma in Economic and Social Planning. The following year he left the banking industry as a deputy bank manager. Galitsky founded his first at the age of 27. True, not alone, but together with partners. The initial direction of its activity was the distribution of household chemicals and cosmetics from well-known manufacturers. A year later, the aspiring businessman left this project and created it on his own.
Charitable gestures
Even when buying expensive “toys” like a yacht and an airplane, Galitsky does not forget about charity. And this is mainly due to FC Krasnodar. For example, from 2008 to 2020, Sergei invested a little more than $400,000,000 in it. The stadium was built with his personal money ($450,000,000 for the entire construction period), he often sponsors teams’ trips to competitions, actively invests in children’s sports and in the Football Academy at club "Krasnodar". To create it, an investment of $92,000,000 was required from the Krasnodar tycoon.
Another area of Sergei’s charitable activities is the reconstruction of the old Aurora cinema and the improvement of Krasnodar streets. Sergei allocated a little more than $100 million for this.
But Galitsky’s most high-profile case, thanks to which he received the title of “Philanthropist of the Year,” is the stunningly beautiful central park in Krasnodar. There are paths for people with limited mobility, places for walking with children, and paths for sports Krasnodar residents. And all this against the backdrop of beautiful flora, which makes the local air fresh and clean. The total amount of investment in the park is 4,000,000,000 rubles ($64,133,000).
