Yulia Mikhailovna Kogan

(born March 20, 1981, Leningrad) is a Russian singer and songwriter[1][2]. From 2007 to 2008 and from 2010 to 2013 she was a backing and lead vocalist in the Leningrad group. Since 2013, the singer has been pursuing a solo career[3][1].

Biography

Yulia Kogan was born on March 20, 1981 in the city of Leningrad. He has been studying classical vocals since he was sixteen[2]. In 2003 she graduated from SPbGATI - Theater Academy on Mokhovaya.

Since 2000, she has been a soloist of the St. Petersburg State Children's Musical Theater "Zazerkalye". Since then, she has been working as a fashion model and taking part in various pop projects. Since 2007, the singer left other projects and joined the Leningrad group as a backing vocalist, until the collapse of the project in 2008. Since 2010, Yulia Kogan has been a soloist at St. Petersburg Ska-Jazz Review.

In the fall of 2010, the Leningrad group got back together and released a new album in 2011 called “Henna”, on which you can hear a large number of songs performed by Yulia, now as the lead singer of the group[4].

On November 16, 2012, Yulia Kogan’s last concert took place with the Leningrad group, after which Yulia went on maternity leave. And on January 14, 2013, her daughter was born, who was named Elizabeth. Already on March 22, a new video from Leningrad, “Gulf of Finland,” appeared online, in which Julia again appears. At the beginning of September 2013, Yulia Kogan left the Leningrad group[5]. Currently she is a TV presenter of the talk show #Yaprava on the TV channel [6]. In 2014, Yulia Kogan returned to music and began a solo musical career.

In September 2020, the album “Fire Baba” was released. In a review of the album, Sergei Mezenov from Colta.ru talks about: trumpet voice, hypersex, charisma that melts the equipment and multiplies everything performed by ten, perky pop rock with pipes, free genre diversity, caricatured sketches in the texts, the daring freedom of a daring modern woman, capable of speaking openly about things that immediately make prudes blush and sulk. If you listen to “Fire Woman” more carefully, behind the apparent similarity of the confidently mastered form, you will find a colossal difference in content. Her comic sketches (“Blah blah blah”, “Nikita”) are crudely straightforward, her genre experiments are dangerously close to the most clichéd idea of the chosen genres.”[7].

Ex-soloist of “Leningrad” Yulia Kogan: “Shnurov only considers his own work to be good!”

On February 21, the sultry beauty Yulia Kogan performed at Balagan City. Fans remember her well from her participation in the Leningrad group. Not a single subsequent soloist of the odious group managed to outsing and interrupt the image of the “red-haired beast” Yulia. Although four years have passed since Kogan left the group, the artist has released two albums. Kogan brought the “Hard Lyrics” program to Voronezh and told Komsomolskaya Pravda that she is now connected with the popular group, and also why it is not interesting to make a parody of Jasmine.

I'M NOT ASHAMATED THAT I SINGED IN LENINGRAD

- Julia, you are so bright, are you invited to TV?

- Yes, I’m not scandalous. They once called me and “tortured” me for a “problem”; they looked for it, but couldn’t find it. I don’t have any problems with which I can go on TV. They won't just give me a million.

— What is your background in the Leningrad group? And the fact that you are still associated with the team is not a problem for you?

- Not for me. And for them too.

— You left the band four years ago, but people are still trying to compare your albums with Leningrad.

— This is a normal phenomenon: all those who left famous groups are compared. Well, I don’t have the worst prefix ex- to be ashamed of it. Sergei even allowed me to sing three songs from Leningrad.

- You made it up?

- We didn't quarrel.

— How did Shnurov evaluate your current work?

— He evaluates the creativity of all people as bad. He only considers his own good. The rest is bad. And he gave me songs, because in four years I didn’t “drown.” And thereby confirmed that he was not mistaken about me. And I was the best.

— That’s why he didn’t let you into side projects and didn’t allow you to sing jazz at the same time?

“He didn’t allow me because of a sense of possessiveness.”

— Of the songs that the new soloists of “Leningrad” sing, did you like any of them that you thought you should sing?

— Of course, I heard “Louboutins,” because it was impossible not to hear. But I didn’t like any of them that much. The only song I would like to sing is “Signs” with lyrics by Tsvetaeva. I sang it. And it hasn’t been better since I worked in the team.

— Everyone was amazed at how famously you sang the songs of “Leningrad” with obscene language. Is it true that you learned to use obscenities at a confectionery factory?

— Well, I studied to be a pastry chef, it’s a very creative profession. She worked in a factory and at night. They made pies, buns, and cakes. So, according to my observations, women swear more...

— Are you baking buns now?

— I do, I generally like cooking, it calms me down. I wonder why women say: we don’t want to cook, serve these damn men. I don't understand what the problem is at all. I have a relaxed attitude towards food, I’m not a gourmet. I like the process of cooking, for me it is pleasure and relaxation.

IT'S NOT INTERESTING TO MAKE A PARODY OF JASMINE - NO CHARACTER

— Aren’t you tired of the image of the “red-haired beast”?

- No. The image must be recognizable. If he is recognizable, neither you nor the audience can get tired of him. Oh, this is fire-woman! Its cool. Because there are few artists who can be visualized. We can’t say what kind of singer Jasmine is. My husband beat me - that’s why they remembered. 90 percent of our pop artists are no different. Lyuba Uspenskaya is different - she is so “strange”, a little tipsy, that’s her image, Lolita - you know that she will stop a galloping horse. There are only a few of them. I thank God that I am in the galaxy of artists who can be identified. We can immediately remember Lyudmila Gurchenko. When I studied at the theater institute, I said that not all artists can be parodied. And in the end, they do everything on the same ones - who open their mouths wide and walk hunched over. It’s not interesting to make a parody of Jasmine, there’s no character. Dima Bilan jumps, this gives birth to the image of an artist. But few people focus on this. Lately people have been asking me about Olga Buzova. But we can't focus her image. Recognizable: Soso Pavliashvili, Leps. How can you make a parody of Stas Mikhailov, except by unbuttoning your shirt? I absolutely don’t care what songs Tina Turner sings, I am impressed by her as an artist, because she is top class. In the West they pay a lot of attention to this. Freddie Mercury, Michael Jackson are images. And this is more interesting to me than songs. The songs are an addition.

— Isn’t Buzova your competitor?

— I have no competitors at all, except for Lolita and Lyuba Uspenskaya.

— Would you like to sing a duet with someone?

“I’m always for any kind of collaboration, as long as the song is good.” I could sing with anyone who offers a good song - I’m very flexible.

- Even with Stas Mikhailov?

- Why not? Interesting person. So, should I refuse Stas Mikhailov? Let him come. I can handle both the known and the unknown. With loved ones. The question is in the song. If she's good...

— How do you feel about criticism?

- Very bad! Because it generally kills any endeavors. When you start doing something and you are told that it is bad, you give up. When I studied at the theater institute, we had a teacher who at first spread rot on everyone, and harshly. You stand, and she says that your legs are crooked or your teeth are crooked, how do you close your mouth? That's exactly it. In general, my teeth and everything were crooked. Everyone hated her, but by the third year it turned out that this method, it turns out, is like this - if you pass all these tests, then you are strong. And if you break down, like they break down in the first year of theater institutes and leave, then her method worked. I turned a deaf ear to everything. I generally have such a good defensive reaction because as a child I was an ugly duckling and everyone bullied me. And I have already adapted to the state of protection. Therefore, if they tell me that I have crooked teeth, I say: I myself have crooked ones!

— What bothers you in life?

- My stupid character - I don’t know how to achieve something, go over my head, I want to remain myself all the time. It’s difficult for me to achieve anything in this profession; I have to destroy myself. Therefore, I was lucky that I met Sergei Shnurov. With my character, I would never have been able to achieve anything in my life. What is happening to me now is his work. He moved me, and I don't drown! But don’t follow me, go ahead!

An excerpt characterizing Kogan, Yulia Mikhailovna

Boris looked into her lively face with an attentive, affectionate gaze and did not answer. - You do not want? Well, come here,” she said and went deeper into the flowers and threw the doll. - Closer, closer! - she whispered. She caught the officer's cuffs with her hands, and solemnity and fear were visible in her reddened face. - Do you want to kiss me? – she whispered barely audibly, looking at him from under her brows, smiling and almost crying with excitement. Boris blushed. - How funny you are! - he said, bending over to her, blushing even more, but doing nothing and waiting. She suddenly jumped up on the tub so that she stood taller than him, hugged him with both arms so that her thin bare arms bent above his neck and, moving her hair back with a movement of her head, kissed him right on the lips. She slipped between the pots to the other side of the flowers and, lowering her head, stopped. “Natasha,” he said, “you know that I love you, but...” “Are you in love with me?” – Natasha interrupted him. - Yes, I’m in love, but please, let’s not do what we’re doing now... Four more years... Then I’ll ask for your hand. Natasha thought. “Thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen...” she said, counting with her thin fingers. - Fine! So it's over? And a smile of joy and peace lit up her lively face. - It's over! - said Boris. - Forever? - said the girl. - Until death? And, taking his arm, with a happy face, she quietly walked next to him into the sofa. The countess was so tired of the visits that she did not order to receive anyone else, and the doorman was only ordered to invite everyone who would still come with congratulations to eat. The Countess wanted to talk privately with her childhood friend, Princess Anna Mikhailovna, whom she had not seen well since her arrival from St. Petersburg. Anna Mikhailovna, with her tear-stained and pleasant face, moved closer to the countess’s chair. “I’ll be completely frank with you,” said Anna Mikhailovna. – There are very few of us left, old friends! This is why I value your friendship so much. Anna Mikhailovna looked at Vera and stopped. The Countess shook hands with her friend. “Vera,” said the countess, addressing her eldest daughter, obviously unloved. - How come you have no idea about anything? Don't you feel like you're out of place here? Go to the sisters, or... Beautiful Vera smiled contemptuously, apparently not feeling the slightest insult. “If you had told me long ago, mamma, I would have left immediately,” she said, and went to her room. But, passing by the sofa, she noticed that there were two couples sitting symmetrically at two windows. She stopped and smiled contemptuously. Sonya sat close to Nikolai, who was copying out poems for her that he had written for the first time. Boris and Natasha were sitting at another window and fell silent when Vera entered. Sonya and Natasha looked at Vera with guilty and happy faces. It was fun and touching to look at these girls in love, but the sight of them, obviously, did not arouse a pleasant feeling in Vera. “How many times have I asked you,” she said, “not to take my things, you have your own room.” She took the inkwell from Nikolai. “Now, now,” he said, wetting his pen. “You know how to do everything at the wrong time,” said Vera. “Then they ran into the living room, so everyone felt ashamed of you.” Despite the fact that, or precisely because, what she said was completely fair, no one answered her, and all four only looked at each other. She lingered in the room with the inkwell in her hand. - And what secrets could there be at your age between Natasha and Boris and between you - they’re all just nonsense! - Well, what do you care, Vera? – Natasha said intercedingly in a quiet voice. She, apparently, was even more kind and affectionate to everyone than always that day. “Very stupid,” said Vera, “I’m ashamed of you.” What kind of secrets?... - Everyone has their own secrets. We won’t touch you and Berg,” Natasha said, getting excited. “I think you won’t touch me,” said Vera, “because there can never be anything bad in my actions.” But I’ll tell mommy how you treat Boris. “Natalya Ilyinishna treats me very well,” said Boris. “I can't complain,” he said. - Leave it, Boris, you are such a diplomat (the word diplomat was in great use among children in the special meaning that they attached to this word); It’s even boring,” Natasha said in an offended, trembling voice. - Why is she pestering me? You will never understand this,” she said, turning to Vera, “because you have never loved anyone; you have no heart, you are only madame de Genlis [Madame Genlis] (this nickname, considered very offensive, was given to Vera by Nikolai), and your first pleasure is to cause trouble for others. “You flirt with Berg as much as you want,” she said quickly. “Yes, I certainly won’t run after a young man in front of the guests...” “Well, I achieved my goal,” Nikolai intervened, “I said unpleasant things to everyone, upset everyone.” Let's go to the nursery. All four, like a frightened flock of birds, got up and left the room. “They told me some troubles, but I didn’t mean anything to anyone,” said Vera. - Madame de Genlis! Madame de Genlis! - Laughing voices said from behind the door. Beautiful Vera, who had such an irritating, unpleasant effect on everyone, smiled and, apparently unaffected by what was said to her, went to the mirror and straightened her scarf and hairstyle. Looking at her beautiful face, she apparently became even colder and calmer. The conversation continued in the living room.

The childhood of Yulia Kogan

The future soloist was born on March 20, 1981 in the first capital of Russia - St. Petersburg. In her youth, the girl was actively interested in swimming. She did not miss a single lesson and was able to get into great shape.

However, her soul was still drawn to singing. During her school years, her parents could not afford an expensive vocal teacher or a prestigious music school, so the girl had to learn everything on her own.

Yulia Kogan chose singing for herself. Even at that age, her voice was different from other girls who sing. He was more dynamic and expressive. Yulia attended a singing class, and at some point the teacher paid attention to the student’s abilities and began to help her realize her potential.

True, after school, the girl first studied at a vocational school, specializing in pastry, and after that she entered the Theater Academy on Mokhovaya. This happened for the simple reason that people are accepted into musical institutions from a certain age, when the voice has already formed.

She managed to master the difficult rules of singing and gain the necessary knowledge that helped her enter a higher education institution. Having not previously studied in specialized schools, Yulia was able to successfully enter the local academy of performing arts.
