Have you invested in not depending on roles? - Yes, what did I not do in those very 90s - even private driving. I bombed for a year and a half. I had two children, and they had to be fed. I am never shy about any work, even if it is not very respectable. If I need to earn money, I will do it without hesitation. It is impossible to combine the restaurant business and acting, and no one has succeeded. These are incompatible things. Yes, many artists in the world have their own restaurants, but they don’t run them, they just get paid for their own name. When Robert De Niro opens a good Japanese restaurant, he does it with the famous restaurateur Nobu, and I don't think he tells this genius how to make sushi. - But in any case, it turns out that you are engaged in cooking to the detriment of your main, acting incarnation. “Nothing comes to my detriment.” I absolutely love cooking. Sometimes it seems like I should have become a chef. Or there would be a brand chef - these are the people who invent dishes, teach how to cook and leave. I myself work from eight in the morning until late in the evening. I used to start at ten, but now I have a small child who wakes me up at eight. I work hard until I drop. Sometimes I finish at one or two in the morning. And Saturdays and Sundays are also strange days. That is, I come up with something all the time, and my colleagues and subordinates suffer from this. - Colleagues, okay. And this is the main point. — You were born in Baku, weren’t you? — Yes, I lived there until I was 18. When I come to the Moscow market, there are a lot of Azerbaijanis there, and they recognize me immediately. They respect me very much, tell me about all my roles, and are proud of me. At the last moment, our Azerbaijani friends took my mother, brother, sister, their children, and wives out of Baku in armored personnel carriers and escorted them on the train to the Dagestan border so that no one would touch them. Acting is my “roof”. Maybe because I play mafia guys all the time. When my relatives fled from Baku, I, of course, brought everyone to my home in Moscow, and they lived with us in a two-room apartment. Then the policeman came every time and demanded that I take them back. I say: “You see, this is my paralyzed mother, I won’t take her anywhere.” And the cop: “This is Gorbachev’s order.” Many years later, I met Mikhail Sergeevich at some party and reminded him of this. “Unfortunately,” Gorbachev replied, “not all my orders were correctly understood.” I was shocked. — Did you play a Georgian in Mikhalkov’s film “12”? - This is not a Georgian or even a Caucasian. There are two special nations - Baku residents and Tiflis Armenians. So, I played the Tiflis Armenian. They are very famous for their antics and behavior. In Georgia, when you need to somehow identify a person, they say: “Well, this is an Armenian from Tiflis, you understand.” In the film I speak both Armenian and Georgian, mixing everything. Although at first Nikita Sergeevich asked me to play a pure Georgian, he agreed with my version. In general, Nikita did not monitor the accuracy of execution. He wasn't interested. The main thing for him is the image. He could suggest a look, a gesture. He provoked us all to come up with ideas, thoughts, and then he himself selected the most delicious ones. Nikita simply poisoned my life with this film. After filming, I was truly depressed for a whole year, because I had not experienced such strong feelings for a long time. — Do you feel like a real Muscovite? — I have never divided people by nationality. If in front of me one of my loved ones offends a person because of his nationality, I will simply destroy him. Although in my youth I was teased by everyone in the queue. After graduating from GITIS, the young and talented actor worked from 1980 to 1986 in the troupe of the Sovremennik Theater, where his master Oleg Tabakov was the leading artist. In 1986, Tabakov founded his theater-studio “Tabakerka”, where Sergei went to work. In the 80s, he became interested in directing, and in 1991 he staged the play “The Inspector General”. The actor served in “Tabakerka” until 1991, and then decided to engage in independent activities.

Sergei created a movie, but this business was not successful for him. There was even a period in the 90s when I worked as a taxi driver for a year and a half. He was never shy about any kind of work if circumstances required it.

From 1998 to 2000 he worked as chief director at the Dzhigarkhanyan Drama Theater. The actor made his film debut in 1980 in the dramatic film “Named Friend,” where he played the head of a laboratory. The next year, in 1981, he was offered a small guest role at Kirill’s farewell in the film “Kin.”

The actor got his first leading role in 1984 in the film project “The Winning of a Lonely Businessman” by Chilean director Sebastian Alarcón, where Sergei played the role of the Latin American Raul Sanchez, nicknamed Pomponio. Afterwards, the actor starred in seven more Chilean films in the title role, which made him very famous in Chile.

Sergei began actively acting in films in the mid-90s. Directors often invited him to play the role of a mafioso. His filmography includes about 130 films of various genres, from comedies to dramas. The actor’s outstanding works are: “Spanish Actress for the Russian Minister”, “Turkish Gambit”, “12”, “Doctor Tyrsa”, “Crew” and others.

Since 1986, Sergei began working as a film director, his first work was the short film “Krazy”. Until 2020, Sergei continues to make films and TV series, including:

  • "The Fifth Corner" (2005);
  • “Detective Putilin” (2007);
  • "Someone else's daughter" (2016).

In addition, he was involved in dubbing various films. He was a co-owner and producer of the film. In 2020, Sergei staged the play “Parade” on the stage of the Sovremennik Theater, in which Mikhail Efremov, Alena Babenko and other famous actors participated.

In 2020, he staged the play “Amsterdam” at Sovremennik. The actor also writes various scripts for entertainment television shows.

On May 19, 2020, Sergei, together with his son Stepan, took part in the show “Hello, Andrey!” In 2020, the actor can be seen in several new film projects: “Crimean Bridge. Made with love!”, “Lily” and “Elusive”, as well as two films are in production.
