Alexandra Kiseleva, whom fans of modern dance art know under the pseudonym Sasha Klevaya (Sasha Cool), is a young dancer who prefers the shocking vogue style. Kiseleva also achieved success in the modeling business and cinema, starring in several documentaries and feature films, of which the drama “Dance of Silence” and the youth comedy “Good Boy” stand out.
Alexandra was born on September 29, 2002 and at the age of six she entered her first dance studio. FRM: Let's talk about dancing first. At the age of 6 you first came to the show ballet “Todes”. Do you remember the very first sensations? When did you start to get good at dancing and what was the most difficult thing?
A.K.: My very first feeling was caution. I was afraid to enter the hall, which at that time was still an unusual audience for me. And later, everything was different. I was immediately identified as a soloist. In the hall they were placed in the center, in the first line. The most difficult thing for me was to feel responsible for the entire team. That is, if I do something wrong on stage, then so will everyone else. Therefore, I always tried to prevent this from happening and give my best on stage.
FRM: What helps you overcome this threshold of fear before performing and switch to the dance itself?
A.K.: I believe that this so-called “stage fright” is the best and most non-trivial feeling that an artist can feel only before going on stage. And never again. Therefore, at one moment, I decided not to be afraid of this fear, but, on the contrary, to accept it and enjoy it. And believe me, if you defeat him, you will definitely succeed on stage.
FRM: Was your mother’s support key in the casting of “The Big Dance”?
A.K.: Yes. After all, any child of 10 years old cannot make a serious decision on his own. But the desire can manifest itself, as I did. In general, my mother is my stylist, my support and support. For which I am incredibly grateful to her.
FRM: Who selects your costumes for performances?
A.K.: We come up with all the costumes ourselves. Everything comes from our heads, but, of course, we take inspiration from some magazines, famous shows, or even from some everyday things. Then we draw our idea on a sheet of paper and begin the creation process.
FRM: After two days of hard casting and all the worries, you were not accepted into the project solely because of your age. Was it offensive? Why didn’t they immediately say that the age limit was so important, why was it forced to go through this? Or was there no talk about age initially?
A.K.: Initially, we were told that if we liked the dancer, we would take him, regardless of his age. But later the producer of the show arrived and changed his mind. It always happens to me that I participate in adult projects. I'm doing some experiments for myself. I work and compete with people who are older than me. And this is probably why my interests and outlook on life are very different from the hobbies of many of my peers. And regarding the casting, after the screenings, Lika really wanted to take me and asked the producer to allow me to participate in the show, but at that time I was only 10 years old, and I was the only dancer of that age at the casting. If I had been at least 14, I think I would have been allowed to participate.
FRM: In the end, the fact that you came to the casting and took part in it despite the fact that you didn’t pass, did this event change your entire future life? Have you started working with Angelica Stitch? How did your collaboration begin?
A.K.: It was on that day that the “BIG DANCING” truly began in my life. And I’m sure that even though I didn’t manage to get into the show on Channel 1, this project came my way for a reason. As I like to say: “everything that is not done only leads to the best.” After the casting, my mother and I began to attend all the broadcasts with the Moscow team at Glav Kino. Lika invited me to take part in the Galla concert with the team. And then, I realized that I need to develop and learn further. Therefore, I went to Lika’s group to study Jazz-funk. It was very exciting and emotional. Once at her master class, Lika showed Vogue style. And then my love for this style appeared. Later, Lika began to work with me individually and took me to “THE HOUSE OF LANVIN”, having previously received the consent of the founder of the house, Dashaun Wesley, who is a style icon. He is currently touring on the “Anti world” world tour with famous singer Rihanna. It was a great joy for me. To this day, I dance Vogue and am very grateful to Lika for inspiring me to further work and instilling a love for this elegant style.
FRM: At some point, Lika stopped teaching, and at the age of 11 you had a desire to leave dancing. Tell us about this difficult period.
A.K.: Yes, I didn’t have an easy period. But in the end everything worked out as it should. Now I'm training with Karina Ninja Zorra, who is also one of the best representatives of Vogue style.
FRM: You won the Festival in Sweden. Was this your first major victory?
A.K.: It was a very big victory. She was significant in several ways. Firstly, it was the 10th anniversary of the annual festival THE INTERNATIONAL DANCE CONTEST STREET STAR 2020, which brought together the best dancers from all over the world. Secondly, before this, at my age, no one had ever won at this festival, especially the “Vogue Run Way” category. And finally, exactly a year later, in 2016, I won two more important categories there: “Vogue New Way” and “Vogue Old Way”. This is also of great importance to me, because no one from Russia has ever won three categories at this festival.
FRM: Who came up with such an amazing pseudonym Candy XLanvin?
A.K.: Art Overall came up with such a sweet nickname for me; at that time we were in the same house together. How this happened is a different story.
FRM: Since 2013 you have become the New York representative of The House of Xclucive Lavnin. Can you tell our readers how this came about and what exactly this representation means?
A.K.: I have already told you how this happened. This means great responsibility and, of course, status. Moreover, in the Lanvin house there are only 5 representatives from Russia, which is very few. The signature of our house is style, grace and beauty. Being in our house means bringing vogue culture to the masses. Show, share and teach.
FRM: Tell us a little more about the dance styles of Vogue, Dashaun Wesley. And why exactly did they become so close to you?
A.K.: Dashaun is the head of the New York house of Lanvin. It is he who decides who can have a Lanvin prefix. (In Vogue style, there are houses with their own history and traditions in which this style of dance originated. Members of each house indicate after their name the name of the house they represent). He always gives some advice, tries to monitor and help every member of the house. Once on the popular TV show “America's Best Dance Crew” (ABDC) in 2009, where the Vogue Evolution team performed, Dashaun, who was a member of this team, made a loud statement that not only hoppers can rock the dance floor, demonstrating together with the team to the Vogue audience. This statement became a turning point and impetus in the development of the style; it, along with other styles, is beginning to be included in Stree Dance competitions everywhere. But it’s impossible to talk about vogue substyles in more detail, briefly, because each substyle has its own history. But I will try to talk about the most basic ones: Old way is the so-called posing, which is based on pronounced posing and obeys three basic principles: Style, Prestigious and Grace. New way - includes elements that require full concentration, balance and body control. New Way - based on various dance techniques, acrobatic elements, flexing, musicality and stretching. Runway - professional catwalk technique combined with stylized chic suits. Vogue Femme is the most feminine dance direction, subject to five main elements: Catwalk, Duckwalk, Hands performance, Spins&Dips and Floor performance. Voque Femme is based on femininity, emphasizing the lines of the figure. The categories I prefer are Runway, New way and Old way.
FRM: You took part in such projects as the Eurovision festival of the best choreographers of Russia as part of the team: “Start.rec”, as well as the “Pirate Station” show from Radio Record. What impressions do you remember the most and the projects themselves too?
A.K.: Each project is rich in its own way. A crazy outburst of emotions. And, of course, the most memorable project is the show “Pirate Station” from Record Dance Radio. By the way, here is the answer to your question about my age, in the entire history of the “Pirate Station”, I am the only one who took part in it at such a young age. It was a grandiose production of six parts - six revolutions.
FRM: Incredibly considering your age, is it true that you were the choreographer for Eurovision 2020? What dances did you perform and for whom, if it’s not a secret?
A.K.: Many people are surprised by this. Yes, I really was in the role of choreographer at Junior Eurovision 2020. I choreographed and thought through the concept of the number for the young singer Eden Golan, winner of the “New Wave” 2014. And together with me this number was performed by my good friend, a wonderful dancer and one of members of the house Lexa Lanvin.
FRM: Let's move on to the topic of cinema. Let's probably start with when you became interested in the acting profession, and where did you start?
A.K.: I’m just starting my film career. And I hope that all my main roles are still ahead.
FRM: You are a participant and finalist of the Actors’ Laboratory at the Amedia film studio 2020. What did participation in the Laboratory give?
A.K.: Participation in this crazy project gave me a lot of experience, and I became convinced that my acting career is just developing, which is really on the right path. After all, among more than fifty professional actors, I passed the selection and took 3rd place. Which I was surprised and incredibly happy about, because already accomplished actors took part in this project. I was also very pleased to meet Maria Ivakova there (the host of “Heads and Tails. Shopping”), whose work I have been watching for a long time, and Anastasia Ivanova, a participant in the TV series “Univer.” I was incredibly happy to meet the actors and, of course, the jury of this project. These are famous directors and producers who gave advice and guidance, which is also very nice.
FRM: You played the main role in the film “Dance of Silence” directed by Evgeniy Kravchenko. What is the film about, and what is the character of your heroine?
A.K.: This wonderful film is about a deaf-mute girl who learns to dance. She has to cope with many difficulties in life. And overcome your internal conflict. I advise everyone to watch it, because it is very motivating.
FRM: You also took part in the feature film “Good Boy” directed by Oksana Karas. What was your role in this project?
A.K.: The role of the main character’s classmate is Sasha, who has many friends at school and dances very well, including my favorite Vogue style. In this film, there is an episode where Sasha and her friend show Vogue to the school principal, played by the famous actress Tatyana Dogileva. The school principal selects styles that you can try to dance at the school festival. And the Vogue style for her becomes shocking, but very interesting.
FRM: Is it difficult to learn roles?
A.K.: Since I’m just starting out, it’s sometimes difficult. But I cope with difficulties, and accept this or that role, passing through myself, and merge into the character.
FRM: Which actors and directors would you be interested in working with?
A.K.: This is a very interesting question. Of course, I want to work with the most famous personalities in our Russian cinema.
FRM: How do you find time for everything?
A.K.: “If you want, you can fly into space.”
FRM: A place on Earth that you dream of seeing?
A.K.: I really want to fly to California in LA in the near future.
FRM: What are your immediate goals for 5 years?
A.K.: I don’t like to voice plans. And as soon as my wish comes true, I will definitely inform you (winks).
FRM: Over the past three years, you have had an incredible amount of filming in films and video clips. Which project was most memorable?
A.K.: Of course, filming the feature film “Good Boy”. After all, I managed to work with famous, beloved and professional actors. Such as: Semyon Treskunov, Konstantin Khabensky, Mikhail Efremov. It is very interesting to observe and work with such professionals in their field.
FRM: If we talk about acting education, you have several. Do you think acting education is important, or is talent enough?
A.K.: This is very individual. After all, some people just need talent, while others need to study at a theater university to reveal their talent.
FRM: Given your stunning looks, it is no surprise that you are also a model. Do you like this profession? Which of the projects and filmings was the most striking and what do you remember?
A.K.: I really like this profession. She is close to me. And, I hope, in the future I will devote some part of my life to modeling. I have very interesting plans and proposals in this regard, which I keep secret for now.
FRM: How do you feel about dance flash mobs? They have a unique idea, right?
A.K.: I respect all creative and interesting ideas, including flash mobs, and am always happy to support them. And it seems to me that a flash mob is a great way to direct people with different levels of dance experience towards something good.
FRM: Biggest dream?
A.K.: I probably won’t be original in answering this question. Because I think that a dream is something imaginary. An illusion that changes its form and content over time. But I know for sure that fulfilling it often promises happiness.
