The dramatic fate of actor Yuri Belov and his family

For a decade in the 50s and 60s, Yuri Belov was one of the main stars of Soviet cinema. His roles as simple, cheerful working guys were invariably popular. At the peak of his fame, the actor starred in many, as they now say, cult films. But fame did not bring him happiness. The acting biography of Yuri Belov was not simple.

Yuri Belov was born in Rzhev in 1930.

And it's all about him…

Every time Yuri Belov, whose films are probably known to millions of TV viewers, appears on the screen, it seems as if a warm ray of sunshine is peeking through the window. Each film with his participation literally oozes cheerfulness, kindness, a lot of smiles, and slight mischief. These good Soviet paintings will always warm the soul and give anyone a good mood.

It’s a pity that the biography of this wonderful actor is not filled with only bright and joyful pages. Despite the fact that the actor’s screen image is very bright, charming and joyful, his fate turned out to be very tragic. He gave sunny smiles to the audience, but left for himself only the sad fate of a man who spent six months undergoing treatment in a psychiatric hospital.

Biography

Belov became famous in the role of Grisha in the comedy film Carnival Night. Next were “Spring on Zarechnaya Street”, “Girl without an Address”, “Unyielding”, “Come Tomorrow”, “Queen of the Gas Station”. His characters could not always be called “positive,” much less “standard,” but the actor’s endless charm instantly endeared him to them. Perhaps it was this fact that played a cruel joke on the fate of Yuri Belov - over time, they stopped inviting him to lead roles, and by the end of the 70s they completely forgot about him.

However, there is another version of this oblivion.
At one of the banquets, Belov suddenly announced that in the coming 1964, Khrushchev would be removed. Everyone was dumbfounded by such a prophecy. And then “people in white coats” arrived and took the actor to a “madhouse.” Six months later, Khrushchev was indeed removed, Belov was released, but everyone began to shun him. Advertising:
Yuri Belov was called “strange”. He had encyclopedic knowledge and was not at all like an actor in the very sense that his colleagues were accustomed to - he did not swear, did not become arrogant, did not gossip, did not cheat on anyone, did not say bad words about anyone, but he devoted himself entirely to his work. He really loved the role of Miloslavsky in the dramatization of Bulgakov’s “Ivan Vasilyevich” on the stage of the Film Actor’s Studio Theatre, and he improvised endlessly, shocking his partners every time. They didn't like him for that either.

For the last 10 years of his life, Yuri Belov practically did not act in films. He died on the morning of December 31, 1991. When the “transportation” arrived to pick up his body, “Carnival Night” was playing on TV.

Yuri Belov had no titles, no awards, no prizes.

Graduated from the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography, workshop of B. Bibikov and O. Pyzhova. He was an actor at the Film Actor's Studio Theatre.

I watched several films with his participation. He is a talented person from God. You rarely meet people like him. His personal qualities deserve respect, but in our cruel world they did not understand him.

Childhood and adolescence

One of the most beloved actors of the middle of the last century, Belov Yuri was born in Rzhev (Kalinin region), on the last day of July 1930. Part of his childhood was spent in the Kuril Islands. But the family moved a lot, never staying in one place for more than two or three years: dad was a military man. His last place of service was the Far East, where the Belovs eventually settled.

The boy grew up very kind, smart, cheerful and sociable, feeling at ease everywhere and easily making friends. He had a wild imagination and an unprecedented ability to tell tall tales, which is why his mother prophesied for him to become an actor as a child.

After receiving his school certificate, Yuri Belov, whose biography is a mixture of climbing Olympus and falling from a great height, immediately became a student at the prestigious VGIK. By the way, two hundred people applied for one place there. Despite the fact that Yura was not a striking, handsome man, the selection committee simply could not help but notice him. Yes, and Soviet cinema needed this type: the guy was great for the roles of mechanics, drivers of various positive characters related to the working environment.

Filmography

Yuri Belov managed to star in 39 films during his acting life. Among them: “Mother and Son”, “A Man is Born”, “Thirst”, “Stars of May”, “Leon Garros is Looking for a Friend”, “Alyoshkina’s Love”, “Unyielding”, “Man from Nowhere”, “Knight’s Move”, “ Hussar Ballad”, “Lyubushka”, “Our Mutual Friend”, “Come to Me, Mukhtar”, “Sleeping Lion”. In 1972, in the film “Train Stop - Two Minutes,” the actor played the leading role for the last time. According to the recollections of the director of this film, the image of the main character was ideal for Belov. The inner state of the undeservedly forgotten actor completely coincided with the inner world of his character - the eccentric little peasant Vasily, who has the gift of a real magician.

After this, Yuri Belov's career almost ended. He starred in only nine films: “Big Change”, “Nylon 100%”, “100 grams for courage”, “Shoot and Two Briefcases”, “About Little Red Riding Hood”, “Everyday Life of the Criminal Investigation”, “The Woman Who Sings”, "Diplomats against their will." In the 80s, the actor practically did not work anymore. He was seriously ill, and in ten years he was involved in only four films. He played his last role in the film “Two and One” (1988). There he played an undertaker.

Good eccentric

Having become a student, Belov continued to fantasize. My classmates liked it, the boy was considered witty. In addition, his cheerful fantasies also helped in his studies - teachers showed him respect for his ability to transform into the heroes of the stories he made up.

Probably, if Yuri had not gone into acting, he could have become a wonderful science fiction writer, because he could come up with such a story that everyone present would never cease to be amazed. Despite the fact that the future artist Belov Yuri dreamed up everything so well, he was a fairly educated person, a real “walking encyclopedia.”

In the third year, Nadezhda Rumyantseva joined the group, with whom Belov would later play in “Queen of the Gas Station.” The actress in one of her interviews shared with a journalist that her first impression of Yura was a beautiful radiant smile that she remembered for the rest of her life.

In 1955, having received a diploma of higher education, Belov became a member of the troupe of the Film Actor Studio Theater.

A year later he became famous for his role as Grisha in Carnival Night (1956). Then, over the course of seven years, one after another, films with the actor’s participation were released on the wide screen, which consolidated his success among viewers and made Yuri Belov one of the most popular actors in Soviet cinema. Among them: “Girl Without an Address” (1957), “Unyielding” (1959), “Alyoshka’s Love” (1961), “Come Tomorrow”, “Queen of the Gas Station” (both 1963).

However, since the mid-1960s, Yuri Belov has ceased to be invited to lead roles. Now only supporting roles and short episodes became his lot.

In the 1980s, Belov practically did not act in films. Over the course of a whole decade, he appeared on screens in only four films, and all of them were episodes. His last film is dated 1988 - “Two and One”. Belov starred in it while he was already seriously ill.

On the afternoon of December 31, 1991, “Carnival Night” was supposed to be shown on Central Television. Usually, whenever this picture was shown on TV, the actor sat down at the TV and watched it, remembering his youth. But that day he did not wait for her - on the morning of December 31, his heart stopped.

The actor was buried on January 9, 1992 at the Kuntsevo cemetery in Moscow, plot No. 10.

Carier start

The young actor began acting immediately after graduating from VGIK. At first there were two films and one short film. And the next year, 1956, he woke up famous: TV viewers were shown Ryazanov’s film comedy “Carnival Night,” in which Belov starred with Lyudmila Gurchenko. The on-screen couple was approved by the director immediately after the first auditions. Ryazanov did not even consider other actors.

During filming, the aspiring actor transformed into the cheerful electrician Grisha Koltsov, a charming guy from the next street who is familiar and close to everyone. Immediately after the release of the film, Yuri Belov - an actor whose biography still interests fans of his talent - became literally in great demand. Directors begged him to agree to star in their films.

From melodramas to film stories...

The aspiring actor’s fame was cemented by filming in the cult melodrama “Spring on Zarechnaya Street,” which premiered back in 1956. The leading roles here were played by Nina Ivanova and Nikolai Rybnikov, and Belov was cast in the role of Zhenya Ishchenko.

Another picture of the same year was “A Man Is Born,” where Yuri played in the episode.

After working on Carnival Night, Ryazanov decided to continue collaborating with the talented actor. Therefore, in 1957, he invited him to his new project - the lyrical comedy “Girl without an address.” The main roles here were played by Svetlana Karpinskaya and Nikolai Rybnikov, and viewers saw Belov in the role of Mitya, a friend of the hero Rybnikov. And this film was decorated with Yuri’s radiant smile.

Gradually, Soviet television screens were filled with the works of an amazingly talented actor. In the late sixties, he starred in the military drama “Thirst” with Vyacheslav Tikhonov. In the film story “Stars of May” - with Leonid Bykov and Mikhail Pugovkin. And in the comedy “Unyielding” by Yuri Chulyukin, Belov starred with his classmate Nadezhda Rumyantseva.

A year later, the actor became Arkady, a member of the team of exploration geologists in the film “Aleshkina’s Love.” The main role was played by Leonid Bykov. This picture was seen by almost 24 million Soviet television viewers.

Sharp takeoff

On screen, Belov was almost always simple-minded, good-natured, and cheerful. And, as often happens, the audience transferred the characters’ traits to the actor himself. He excelled in the roles of drivers and workers in various professions. But, they say, in life Belov was not a simpleton at all, but an interesting, erudite interlocutor. And what stories he composed!..

Love, sins and oblivion. The fate of the main actress of “Spring on Zarechnaya Street”

In 1955, along with a diploma from VGIK, Belov received three films at once. Yes, episodic. Yes, one role is not even in the credits. But these attempts were enough for the next “shots” to hit the top ten, and the actor himself woke up famous. These were “Carnival Night” by Eldar Ryazanov and “Spring on Zarechnaya Street” by Marlen Khutsiev . Two films that became classics of Soviet cinema. And six decades later, they are adored by the audience.

Yuri Belov could have done nothing further - fame and popularity would have been enough until the end of his days. However, the directors could no longer do without the cheerful, charming actor. His participation practically guaranteed the film's success. Belov became Eldar Ryazanov’s “insider.” And few people have had such happiness: “Girl without an address”, “Man from Nowhere”, “Give me a book of complaints”, “Hussar Ballad”, “Old Robbers”...

From road movies to comedies

In the same sixtieth year, television viewers saw the joint Soviet-French project “Leon Garros is looking for a friend.” The key characters in the film were played by one French actor, Leon Zitron, and two Russians, Tatyana Samoilova and Yuri Belov. The film was shown not only on Soviet screens, viewers in France also watched it. The music for the film was written by Nikita Bogoslovsky.

The following year, Eldar Ryazanov again delighted everyone with the fantastic comedy film “The Man from Nowhere.” He starred Sergei Yursky in the title role - the Eccentric. Yuri Belov played a policeman. On the set, he again met with Lyudmila Gurchenko, with whom they worked on “Carnival Night.”

And in his next film, Ryazanov again filmed “his” actor. This time it was “Hussar Ballad” - the debut of Larisa Golubkina. Here again Yuri met with his colleague, Yuri Yakovlev, with whom he starred in “The Man from Nowhere.”

A little later, another pleasant meeting took place - with Nadezhda Rumyantseva - in the comedy “Queen of the Gas Station”. This film replenished the golden fund of Soviet cinema. The hero of Yuri Andreevich, the cheerful intercity bus driver Slava, turned out to be very bright and memorable. However, like all the characters of this great actor. Now it’s impossible to imagine this film without Yuri’s signature smile. The film was filmed in the Poltava region at the Piryatina gas station.

It seemed that the directors of the mid-twentieth century were confident that the actor Belov Yuri was a kind of talisman, whose presence in their films was one hundred percent success of any project. Perhaps that is why Evgeny Tashkov invited him to his “Come Tomorrow” feed. And although the key characters in it were the heroes of Ekaterina Savinova and Anatoly Papanov, such a success of the film would not have happened without a bright episode with the joker students played by Yuri Belov and Alexander Shirvindt.

In 1965, the actor had an episode in another Ryazanov comedy, “Give me a book of complaints.” Despite the fact that he did not have the main role, the audience reacted with great sympathy to his character - Nikitin’s friend, journalist German.

Romance with Nadezhda Rumyantseva

Nadezhda Rumyantseva and Yuri Belov in the film “Unyielding”, 1959
Yuri Belov began dating Nadezhda Rumyantseva in his third year. It seemed to everyone around that the wedding was just around the corner. They were such a harmonious couple - both cheerful, sincere, mischievous, there were always groups around them and bursts of laughter were heard.

However, the wedding did not happen... Rumyantseva left Belov when she fell in love with someone else on the set. Yuri took the breakup very hard. He couldn’t look at women for a long time and got married late - after he turned forty.

Why did he disappear from the screens?

Belov stopped appearing on screens in the mid-sixties. He was given practically no roles. According to one version, the reason for this was his careless phrase about Nikita Khrushchev, because of which he fell out of favor with the directors. At one banquet, an actor once mentioned that Khrushchev would be removed in the near future. They said that for such political incorrectness he was put in a psychiatric clinic for six months.

Another version sounded like this: people close to the actor understood that strange things were happening to him. The merry fellow could suddenly plunge into depression for no apparent reason. Neighbors saved him from committing suicide. They called the ambulance. The actor was treated forcibly.

After the clinic he became completely different. He returned to his profession, but colleagues noticed that Yuri began to forget words. Therefore, roles with large chunks of text were no longer trusted to him. He played a taxi driver in the film “Passing through Moscow...”, and duty officer Petya in “Old Robbers”.

In the eighties, Belov played in four films, but only in episodes. His last film work was a melodrama with Georgy Burkov and Elena Mayorova in the lead roles - “Two and One”. Here he was already filming as a seriously ill man. The once smiling and optimistic man played a cemetery worker.

The son of the star of “Carnival Night” Yuri Belov became homeless

Once upon a time, Yuri Belov was a real sex symbol of Soviet cinema. Roles in “Carnival Night” and “Queen of the Gas Station” made him a star, but a tragic fate awaited the actor. Months in a psychiatric clinic, problems with alcohol and further failures in the profession - all this led the artist to death at the age of 61.

Evil fate also overtook Belov’s only son Svyatoslav. The 43-year-old man has been in prison several times, and now it has become clear that he lives on the street. As it turned out, the beloved kicked the heir to the Soviet cinema star out of the house due to continuous drunkenness.

“In the city where we live, in Severodvinsk, absolutely everyone drinks. And my wife has vegetative alcohol intolerance. I resisted for a long time, but eventually I also started drinking. She kicked me out of the house. I live in the entrance. What else should I do? — Svyatoslav said on the air of the “Let Them Talk” program.

Svyatoslav has nowhere to go // Photo: Still from the program

The son of Yuri Belov calls his beloved nothing less than his salvation. After his parents died in the 90s, Svyatoslav was left alone with problems and mental anguish. He tried to numb the pain with illegal substances, but ended up in prison. In the 2000s, faith became the support for the actor’s heir. It was in the monastery where Svyatoslav was a novice that his meeting with Veronica took place. The lovers dreamed of building a happy family and becoming parents, but bad habits still prevailed.

Many guests in the studio were surprised that the only son of Yuri Belov and actress Svetlana Shvaiko had no means of livelihood left. But, as it turned out, Svyatoslav himself transferred his parents’ real estate worth 25 million rubles to strangers, after which he wandered around rented apartments. “There were two apartments, a dacha. But after the death of my parents, I was so worried that I could not conduct business. Some people who introduced themselves as friends of my parents volunteered to help me, and so I lost everything,” the man admitted.

According to the heir to Soviet stars, his problems with alcohol and illegal substances began at a young age. The reason for this was the strange behavior of the father.

“He could hit, I often defended my mother. Sometimes it happened that I would go to bed, and he would come in and pour a bucket of cold water on me. Why did he do this? “I don’t know,” admitted Svyatoslav.

Svyatoslav had a hard time with the death of his parents // Photo: Still from the program

But actress Inna Vykhodtseva is sure that the cause of family quarrels could be the secret affairs of Svyatoslav’s parents on the side. “I heard that Svetlana Shvaiko had a relationship with Vyacheslav Tikhonov. Many people know about this. She also met with the director of our theater. This is also not a secret,” the artist emphasized.

Svyatoslav himself has no doubt that his father loved him deep down, but because of his own problems he simply could not show it. Now the heir to the legend of Soviet cinema is afraid that a similar crisis will brew in his relationship with his son, which will lead to tragedies in the future.

“It’s difficult for me to contact Veronica, the mother of my son. But I want to ask her not to interfere with my communication with the child. Our relationship may be over, but a son must have a father,” the man said.

Former lover does not allow Yuri Belov’s son to communicate with the child // Photo: Still from the program

It is not yet known where Svyatoslav Belov will live in the future. He himself hopes that he will be able to improve relations with his former lover and stay in Severodvinsk. If this does not happen, the heir to Soviet stars plans to move to the south of Russia to once again start everything from scratch.

Yura and Nadya

A cheerful joker and the soul of any company, Yuri Belov fell in love with Nadezhda Rumyantseva when they were in their third year. The relationship was beautiful and seemingly long-term. Everyone was jealous of their romance, but the couple broke up a year later. Rumyantseva began dating actor Vladimir Shurupov. Yuri Belov’s personal life did not develop for a long time after this breakup.

This situation was quite difficult for Belov. But in companies he continued to be a cheerful joker and a smiling interlocutor. The actor never showed how upset he was by the breakup. There were rumors that it was at that time that the young actor harbored some kind of grudge against women and began to avoid them. It was then that the first alarm bells rang, when during a normal conversation Yuri suddenly fell silent and seemed to withdraw into himself. Not everyone around him perceived him correctly: Belov looked like a simpleton, but he was so well-read, erudite, and a deep thinker.

Personal life

The artist had a short affair with Nadezhda Rumyantseva, a former classmate. Actor Yuri Belov, whose personal life is interesting to numerous fans, married (after 40 years) the artist Shvaiko Svetlana. At the time of marriage, his bride was 35 years old. The artist was happy in his family life. In 1976, the couple had a son, Svyatoslav. His fate was not easy. The guy became a drug addict and subsequently went to prison. After his release, the young man spent several years in a monastery. Alexander Orlov, a film director, said in an interview with one publication that Svyatoslav realized his mistakes and is now on the right path. Yuri Belov, whose biography is covered in the article, died in 1991, on December 31. He never waited for the New Year’s screening of the film “Carnival Night,” which reminded him of his cheerful youth. The artist rests in Moscow, at the Kuntsevo cemetery. His wife, Svetlana, survived her husband by only a few years.

Yura and Sveta

They met at the theater. Sometimes we talked, but somehow casually. Svetlana didn’t even imagine that the actor would notice her. And one day he called her at home and invited her to visit. Sveta agreed. I arrived, saw his eyes and stayed in this apartment forever.

Yuri Belov - biography, whose personal life is still of interest to many television viewers, married Svetlana Shvaiko when he was already forty years old. The first years of their life were very happy. They loved to travel to the sea on a motorcycle. When Yuri was already 46, Sveta gave birth to his son Svyatoslav. The boy was weak, so his parents often put him to sleep on the balcony, giving him the home nickname “Balkonsky.”

The actor no longer acted in films - he was simply not invited. He had to earn money as a driver. But the old Moskvich did not bring much wealth to the house. They recognized Belov and asked why he was not visible on the screen now. The man suffered from such obsessive attention.

Svetlana, despite the fact that she was also an actress, left the profession without regret. I wanted to help my husband so that he would not worry so much about his creative failures. She and her friend opened a small cafe. At first everything was fine, there was a good profit. But then the housewives refused to pay the racketeers. The Belovs lost not only their cafe, but also their apartment.

The actor finally went into depression. Living with him became very difficult. Svetlana and her son went to stay with relatives, but once a week she came to the apartment where she had once been happy, to cook food and put things in order.

Brief happiness

The actor was saved by... love. Came up by accident. When no one was waiting. And it turned out to be so opportune!..

Svetlana Shvaiko served with Yuri Belov at the film actor's Studio Theater. For many years they walked past and said hello. And... they didn’t show any attention to each other. Until one fine morning the phone rang in Svetlana’s apartment. She didn't immediately recognize the voice. But she arrived. I saw his eyes. And... she stayed.

Yuri was already 40, Svetlana was 31. She managed to be married to colleague Gennady Yudin . But, apparently, it was fate that that marriage would collapse. For the sake of something new. Have a nice day.

The newlyweds' honeymoon actually dragged on for several years. They traveled on a motorcycle. Went to the sea. Svetlana’s career did not work out - there were only a few unnoticeable episodes. But it didn't seem to bother her at all. 6 years after the wedding, the couple had a son. Weak and sickly, Svyatoslav immediately received the nickname “Balkonsky” - during the day his parents put him to sleep on the balcony. The unpleasant story with Yuri was also gradually forgotten. They started calling him into the frame again. True, the former luxury of roles no longer existed. Only Alexander Orlov , the husband of Alla Budnitskaya (Svetlana’s closest friend), entrusted the main one. Nevertheless, Belov and Shvaiko were happy.

And suddenly, in the 1980s, fortune turned away from Yuri again: over the entire decade - 4 nondescript episodes. And no apparent reason for downtime. Although... Maybe the years have taken their toll and the face of the actor, who is over 50, has ceased to radiate a smile? Or maybe competitors who are more suitable for the roles of “heroes of our time” have appeared?

One way or another, Belov could not sit without work. I had to earn extra money as a driver in my Moskvich. Passengers recognized him and asked why he was not filming. And the actor became increasingly depressed. In 1988, he last appeared in a tiny episode. Old and very sick. Played a cemetery worker. And disappeared from sight...

The quiet death of a famous actor

Svetlana once again opened the door to their former family nest on December 31, 1991. Yuri Belov, an actor whose personal life did not turn out the way he dreamed, lay quietly on the sofa. There was no longer any breathing. “Carnival Night,” his favorite film, was shown on TV. The emergency doctor, who arrived at Svetlana’s call, unfortunately, could not help in any way: a long-standing heart disease made itself felt.

During the artist’s funeral service in church, he had an ironic and cheerful expression on his face. It seemed that Yuri would now stand up and smile with that same smile that millions of people still remembered.

His wife passed away very quickly after Yuri himself - she had cancer. The son fell into bad company and was in prison. Rolan Bykov took him on bail and the guy was released much earlier. Then Alla Budnitskaya took care of him, replacing his mother. Svyatoslav became a novice in the monastery. Now he and his wife live far from Moscow.

Yuri Belov in recent years

When the artist’s funeral service was held in church, his face seemed the same as millions of television viewers saw him: an ironic and cheerful expression froze on him, as if Belov was about to wink and smile with his signature smile.
