Famous actor Mikhail Derzhavin died at the age of 81: biography of a legend

Childhood

Misha was born in Moscow on June 15, 1936.

His father, Mikhail Stepanovich Derzhavin, born in 1903, is an actor and served in the Evgeniy Vakhtangov Theater for more than twenty years. He starred in many films, the most famous of which are “The Artamonov Case”, “The Great Turning Point”, “The Battle of Stalingrad”. For his creative merits he received the Stalin Prize of the first degree and had the title of People's Artist of the RSFSR.

Mother, Iraida Ivanovna Derzhavina, born in 1916, was involved in raising children. Misha has two more sisters - the older Anna and the younger Tatyana.

The actor considers his childhood to be the best and happiest time in his life. The family lived on the famous Moscow Vakhtangov Street, which then seemed to the little boy like some kind of microcosm with its cinemas, architectural monuments, theaters and museums. My father’s famous colleagues from the theater lived in the same house as the Derzhavins, often visited them, and Misha met many of them while still just a child.

The most vivid impression from childhood in Mikhail’s memory was the evacuation. The Vakhtangov Theater was evacuated to Siberia, to the city of Omsk in 1941. Mom was then in a position where little sister Tanechka was about to be born. It took a long time to get to Omsk; along the way we made several long stops, one of which was in the city of Balakhna on the picturesque bank of the Volga. There they were accommodated in a school, and little Mikhail made theater scenes and scenery from old geographical maps. He probably had an innate desire for theater.

Then the family finally reached Omsk, by which time the younger sister had already been born. There was an old theater here, in which artists evacuated from Moscow staged performances. From morning to evening, Mikhail spent time behind the theater scenes, watching rehearsals and stunning Vakhtangov productions.

Many wounded soldiers from the front were brought to the local hospital, and theater artists gave performances for them. During one of these performances, five-year-old Misha was placed on a wooden stool and announced: “And now Mikhail Derzhavin will read for you a monologue by Field Marshal Kutuzov.” Misha’s father played this role in the theater, so the boy knew the text by heart. Until now, he clearly imagines that picture before his eyes: many wounded people whose heads, arms and legs were bandaged. And when the boy said the last words: “The enemy will be defeated!”, he heard a roar of applause, only muffled, because the wounded soldiers were clapping their bandaged palms.

70 photos of Mikhail Derzhavin, his wives: Roxana Babayan, Ekaterina Raikina, Nina Budena, daughters, grandchildren

Mikhail Derzhavin was born into an acting family, his father was an Honored Artist of the RSFSR, his name was also Mikhail. Please note that father and son are very similar in appearance, and especially in their youth.

In this photo, Mikhail Derzhavin’s father is Honored Actor of the RSFSR Mikhail Stepanovich Derzhavin.

How did I become acquainted with the work of Mikhail Derzhavin? It seems to me that I always knew about the existence of this talented actor; my parents constantly watched humoresques performed by Mikhail Derzhavin and his closest friend and comrade, Alexander Shirvindt. Nowadays, “Comedy Club” is the main fun for sad people, but in the old days, after a hard day at work, the audience was amused by theatrical skits and “Laughter Panarama”, I won’t tell you exactly what kind of programs they were and what exactly their names were , but the pop-comedy duet Derzhavin-Shchirvindt occupied far from the last place in them, and was very popular just like now the duet of the inseparable Garik Bulldog Kharlamov and Timur Batrutdinov.

Well, a closer acquaintance with the work of Mikhail Derzhavin occurred during my trip to the cinema with my mother, I was 10 years old, we came to visit a relative for a couple of days, decided to occupy ourselves with going to the cinema, the comedy “Womanizer” was on, Now I don’t remember with accuracy all the twists and turns of the plot, but I was impressed by this film. My mother did not expect the comedy to be so straightforward, but after fidgeting a little in her chair, she quickly came to terms with this fact. Sitting in the cinema that evening, we laughed heartily together. The next film in which I liked Mikhail Derzhavin was called “My Sailor”; we already watched this comedy at home together with the whole family. Mikhail Derzhavin's partner in the film was the inimitable Lyudmila Gurchenko, whose performance always simply fascinates me. The plot of “The Sailor” is a little stupid and drawn out, but our whole family watched the film with great pleasure. In both of these films, Mikhail Derzhavin starred with his wife Roxana Babayan, so once and for all I began to associate him with this bright and incredibly funny woman. It seemed to me that Roxana and Mikhail were so different! How did fate bring them together, I wondered, but it was clear that these two were happy, they appeared together on various programs, starred in films together, and gave interviews. Roxana Babayan was incredibly popular in those days. A marvelous voice, expressive appearance, and also the wife of Mikhail Derzhavin himself, and, accordingly, a close friend of Alexander Shirvindt.

But as I found out later, this was already the third marriage for Mikhail Derzhavin, and the second for Roxana Babayan. When they met, both were not free, but Mikhail was already divorcing his wife at that time, and it was not he who lost interest in her, but she left him for another! Roxana Babayan and her husband, a talented saxophonist, were also heading towards a breakup. Officially, Roxana and Mikhail were not free, but formally they were ready for a new relationship, so they quickly filed their divorces and also quickly re-stamped their passports, becoming legal husband and wife. When they got married, he was 44 and she was 34. Despite the fact that both were young, they had no children in this marriage. They lived together for 37 years!

But Mikhail Derzhavin has a child from his second marriage - daughter Maria and two grandchildren - Peter and Pavel (in this photo he is with his grandchildren). But Roxana Babayan, unfortunately, does not have any children of her own.

Well, Mikhail Derzhavin was married three times, and each of his love stories was bright and worthy of writing a novel. The first wife of Mikhail Derzhavin was Ekaterina Raikina, the daughter of the famous satirist Arkady Raikin. Mikhail and Ekaterina were married for only two years; after graduating from the Shchukin school, they were sent to serve in different theaters; the spouses rarely saw each other and this contributed to the fading of their feelings. Mikhail Derzhavin and Ekaterina Raikina had no children in this marriage. Ekaterina was a very beautiful, prominent girl, her second husband was the famous actor Yuri Yakovlev, with whom she gave birth to a son, Alexei, this happened a year after the break with Derzhavin.

Among the huge Raikin family you can also see young Mikhail Derzhavin.

In this photo, Ekaterina Raikina is at a more advanced age.

The second wife of Mikhail Derzhavin was Nina Budyonnaya - the daughter of that same famous Marshal Semyon Mikhailovich Budyonny - three times Hero of the Soviet Union! Nina and Mikhail lived in marriage for 17 years, but then she left for someone else, a certain talented artist became her new chosen one, Nina Budyonnaya herself was also an artist by profession and the world of fine art was probably closer to her than the world of theater and cinema. Mikhail Derzhavin was always on the best terms with all his ex-wives.

In this photo, the second wife of Mikhail Derzhavin is the artist Nina Budyonnaya.

In this photo, Mikhail Derzhavin is with his father-in-law Semyon Budyonny and mother-in-law.

And finally, there are many photos of Roxana Babayan in her youth and at a more advanced age.

School years

From the evacuation, the Derzhavins returned to Moscow, to their home, to their favorite street. Many actors, musicians and artists still lived here. And fifteen meters from the entrance there was a theater school named after Shchukin. Therefore, Misha and his courtyard friends then had one thing to do - theater. It generally seemed to them that there were no other professions in the world except artists. Boys and girls built improvised theater stages, designed and made the scenery themselves, assigned roles, staged fairy tales and watched them themselves, that is, they were both artists and spectators.

Famous Vakhtangovites continued to gather in the Derzhavins’ apartment: theater and film director Ruben Nikolaevich Simonov, People’s Artist of the USSR Andrei Abrikosov, director of the Mayakovsky Theater Nikolai Okhlopkov, film and theater actors Anatoly Goryunov and Viktor Koltsov. With such an environment, it is unlikely that Mikhail could dream of another profession other than an actor.

Although his dad really wanted his son to become an artist. That is why, along with secondary school, Misha also attended drawing classes. Young Derzhavin often picked up brushes, and his father liked his work, but in the future, Mikhail still gave preference to the theater. But he does not deny that the art school made its positive contribution; now sometimes he paints small landscapes, just for the soul.

Stalin himself often drove past the Derzhavins’ house. Sometimes the kids were walking home from school, and there were guards along the road, and it was clear that Joseph Vissarionovich was now being taken there. The boys even managed to see him in the window of a foreign car. They were wildly delighted, because at school children were raised in such a way that their country was the happiest, and Comrade Stalin gave them the best childhood in the world. Therefore, seeing him was a great joy for the children.

The artists of the Vakhtangov Theater spent the summer in the rest house. But the Derzhavin family rented a small country house from a miller, because dad loved to fish. Unfortunately, during one of these vacations, Mikhail's father died; he was only 48 years old. There was a heart attack, the son ran to the rest home to get a doctor, but dad could not be saved.

As Mikhail himself says jokingly, after graduating from high school, he simply left one entrance of their house and went into another, where he submitted documents for admission to the Shchukin School.

Biography of Mikhail Derzhavin

The Derzhavin family was very famous in its time.
Father Mikhail Stepanovich Derzhavin was People's Artist of the USSR, worked at the Vakhtangov Theater. Mother - Derzhavina Iraida Ivanovna. Their family lived in a house on the legendary Vakhtangov Street, where many famous actors and artists lived. The famous theater school named after Shchukin was located in the same house. Young Mikhail grew up in a theatrical environment. With their peers, they constantly showed theatrical performances, wrote fairy tale scripts themselves, designed scenery, and, of course, acted in their own performances. The guys made the curtain from geographical maps. For their children, parents constantly organized ballroom evenings, held concerts, and improvised. Derzhavin already knew from childhood who he would be in the future.

And I didn’t have to choose, everything pushed me to the theater. Frequent guests at the Derzhavins’ house were people from the Vakhtangov Theater: Ruben Simonov, Viktor Koltsov, Anatoly Goryunov, Nikolai Okhlopkov, Andrei Abrikosov. Derzhavin had been friends with Alexander Shirvindt since childhood; he was a frequent guest in the house on Vakhtangov. Their parents were friends and visited each other constantly. Subsequently, Shirvindt and Derzhavin formed a creative duo that won the hearts of millions.

Mikhail then didn’t even think that it was possible to visit any other places besides the theater. The theater was everything to him.

Mikhail Derzhavin in his youth

The Derzhavins often rented a house in summer cottages in summer. The famous “Vakhtangovites” also came there. Mikhail Mikhailovich recalled: When the war began, the Vakhtangov Theater was taken to Omsk. Mikhail's mother was pregnant with her daughter. While they were traveling to Omsk, Mikhail’s sister was born and they named her Tatyana. During the evacuation, the theater continued its performances. Young Mikhail attended all of his father's performances, without missing a single one.

In 1954, Mikhail entered, of course, the Shchukin Theater School. His teachers were famous graduates of Vakhtangov, whom he knew and remembered from childhood from home gatherings.

Education

In 1954, Misha took the entrance exams and prepared everything as expected - a poem, a fable and prose. It was hard to read, because Mikhail had known the teachers who sat on the admissions committee since childhood. Nevertheless, he did a great job and was praised. Arriving home, the guy enthusiastically told his mother and sisters how he passed the exam. And in the morning they called their apartment and told Misha to come to the admissions office again and read everything the same way as yesterday. The guy was terribly upset. But then it turned out that a French theater came to Moscow on tour, and they decided to show them how admission to the Shchukin School was carried out.

Without a father, the Derzhavin family had a very difficult time, so after the first year, Mikhail began to earn extra money. He started as extras at the Gorky Film Studio and Mosfilm, and then began to receive invitations to act in films. In the film “Different Fates” he got the cameo role of a Komsomol member speaking at a meeting. And in 1956, in the film “They Were the First” directed by Yuri Egorov, Derzhavin already played one of the main characters - high school student and poet Evgeniy Gorovsky.

Theater activities

In 1959, Derzhavin received a diploma of completion of his studies at the Shchukin School and immediately entered the service of the Lenin Komsomol Theater. The actor does not hide that the choice of this particular theater institution was made only because it had reservations for military service.

Actor Alexander Shirvindt had already worked in this theater; Derzhavin had known him since childhood; their parents were friends and communicated closely. Subsequently, this acquaintance grew into a strong friendship and resulted in an inimitable creative duet.

In 1963, the wonderful Soviet director and teacher Anatoly Vasilyevich Efros came to work at the theater. It was under him that productions such as:

  • “A movie is being made”;
  • “You are 22, old people”;
  • “One hundred and four pages about love.”

Derzhavin considers his experience at the Lenin Komsomol Theater under the direction of Efros to be the best acting school. Theatre-goers especially appreciated the production “Dangerous Age”, where Mikhail played the main role - the dude Bubus. The play was an incredible success, and Bubus became a calling card for the actor Derzhavin.

In 1965, Mikhail joined the theater troupe on Malaya Bronnaya, where he appeared on stage for three years. And in 1968, actor Andrei Mironov and director Valentin Pluchek lured Derzhavin to the Moscow Satire Theater, where he still works. Mikhail was immediately approved for the main role in the production of “Banquet” based on the play by A. Arkanov and G. Gorin. In 1970, Alexander Shirvindt also came to work at the satire theater.

On the stage of the Moscow Theater of Satire, Derzhavin played a huge number of bright, memorable roles:

  • Martial in "Intervention";
  • Bobchinsky in “The Inspector General”;
  • Colonel Skalozub in "Woe from Wit";
  • Bear in "An Ordinary Miracle"
  • London Police Chief Brown in The Threepenny Opera;
  • Tartuffe in the production “Tartuffe, or the Deceiver”;
  • Epikhodov in “The Cherry Orchard”;

  • Robert McNamara in the play "Burden of Decisions";
  • Veal in "Mad Money";
  • Narokov in “Talents and Admirers”;
  • General Purkrabek in the production of “Schweik, or Hymn to Idiocy.”

For his great contribution to the development of theatrical art, Mikhail Derzhavin received awards - the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, III and IV degrees. In 1974 he was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the RSFSR, in 1976 - Honored Artist of Poland, in 1989 - People's Artist of the RSFSR.

"Zucchini 13 chairs"

At the end of the 60s, it became fashionable to organize theatrical skits in the House of Actors, in which many famous artists participated. It was at these skits that the duet of Derzhavin and Shirvindt was formed, making them famous throughout the Soviet Union.

Mikhail gained particular popularity with the release of the humorous program “Zucchini 13 Chairs.” The idea was proposed by actor Alexander Belyavsky, who at that time often starred in Polish films and saw the power of variety programs there. Miniatures were selected from foreign humor in socialist countries, and Soviet authors staged humorous numbers based on them.

Mikhail had the role of Mr. Presenter along with Andrei Mironov and Alexander Belyavsky.

The enormous success could be judged by the fact that Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev became a big fan of the program; he did not miss a single episode. In the history of the Soviet Union, “Zucchini 13 Chairs” was the longest running television series.

Personal life

Mikhail Mikhailovich was known as a famous womanizer, a conqueror of women. He officially registered his relationships with women three times.

The artist's first wife Ekaterina Raikina, daughter of the legendary Arkady Raikin. He and the young girl studied together at the theater school. When Raikin himself visited the capital, he stayed at the Moscow Hotel. So, Derzhavin and Katya ran to Raikin’s hotel to eat. Always hungry students. Arkady Raikin never meddled in the personal life of his daughter and Mikhail. Even after the divorce, he continued to treat Derzhavin warmly and welcomingly.

The second wife of the famous artist is Nina Budyonny, the daughter of Semyon Mikhailovich Budyonny. Nina studied journalism at Moscow State University. The couple had a daughter, Maria. Maria Mikhailovna made her parents happy by giving birth to sons Petya and Pasha. The daughter graduated from GITIS.

Mikhail Derzhavin with his wife Roxana Babayan

Derzhavin's last wife was People's Artist Roxana Babayan. They met in the cabin of the plane and flew together to perform in Kazakhstan. He had no idea then that Roxana could be such an extraordinary girl. Before they met, she seemed to him like an “overweight Armenian girl,” although he liked her songs. Mikhail later admitted: “It was love at first sight. ...The acquaintance took place in heaven, which means the marriage was registered in heaven.”

Movie

Of course, such a bright and talented artist could not be ignored by the cinema. Mikhail Derzhavin’s track record includes many wonderful roles:

  • "Save a drowning man";
  • "Crazy";
  • “Three in the boat, not counting the dog”;
  • "My sailor";
  • “The investigation is being conducted by the Experts. He left and did not return";
  • "Womanizer";
  • “Winter evening in Gagra”;
  • "Impotent";
  • "Old nags."

In cinema, the actor has developed the image of a passionate lover of women. But he was like that not only on the screen; Mikhail does not hide the fact that many bright and romantic relationships happened in his life.

Death

Back in 2020, Derzhavin began to have health problems, and it was then that he was admitted to intensive care with a diagnosis of left-sided pneumonia. But the doctors managed to get the people’s artist back on his feet.

M. Derzhavin died on January 10, 2020

Periodically, news appeared in various media that Mikhail Mikhailovich Derzhavin was ill, but everything worked out well.
On January 10, Mikhail’s wife Roxana Babayan announced the news of her husband’s death. According to her, Mikhail was taken to the hospital at the beginning of December 2020 and the doctors fought long and hard for his life. But this time the miracle did not happen, the body could not cope with the disease and Mikhail Derzhavin died. https://youtu.be/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tWA5zTqQp4
