EXCLUSIVE. Interview with Taylor Momsen: “Concerts are a kind of sex!”
Taylor Momsen is a rising star
Taylor Momsen, a 17-year-old model, actress and young rock star, who has already been dubbed the new Courtney Love in music circles, recently visited Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Momsen gave two concerts in two capitals and convinced everyone that she really had plenty of talent, charisma and sexuality. After the release of the popular series “Gossip Girl”, in which Taylor Momsen played the ambitious and talented resident of Brooklyn Jenny Humphrey, she immediately became an idol of youth around the world.
However, Taylor’s cherished dream was always not the set, but the stage, and this dream came true for Momsen very quickly. Her “Chanel grunge” style, as Taylor Momsen herself calls it, is copied by hundreds of thousands of girls around the world. Madonna chose her as the face of her Material Girl clothing line, John Galliano as the face of his John Galliano Parlez Moi d'Amour fragrance, and songs from Momsen's debut album The Pretty Reckless, Light me up, quickly won first place in all the world charts.
Taylor Momsen talks about her popularity, her style, her favorite music, gossip and dreams in an exclusive interview with WomanJournal.ru.
Taylor Momsen is a blast on stage
Taylor, it’s probably not easy to be on the wave of popularity so quickly, at such a young age. First the success of the TV series Gossip Girl, then the rise of your band The Pretty Reckless and the title of a new rock star. Aren't you feeling dizzy?
Sometimes you feel dizzy. It all happened so damn fast! I didn’t have time to come to my senses, maybe that’s why I sometimes behave strangely. Star fever is dangerous. But I try to control myself.
How were your Russian concerts? What are your impressions?
Fabulous! I was shocked when I heard the audience singing along with me at a Moscow concert. The hall was very close, and I could see almost every person in person. There were a lot of cool, fiery girls, they bawled songs along with me, but it was doubly nice to see how grown-up and very nice guys were having fun and singing along.
At the festival in St. Petersburg there were much more people, there was a different energy, I couldn’t communicate with the audience so closely, but that was also wonderful. Performing on stage with two of my favorite musicians – Skin and Jared Leto – is amazing!
At concerts you always communicate with the audience and often involve the fans in your playing. Aren't you afraid that some rabid fans might harm you, scare you, or tear your clothes?
Rip Taylor Momsen's clothes? Yes please! I myself often tear clothes on myself and others. I don’t scare easily, I can scare anyone myself. It seems to me that we still need to look for crazy people like me. And then I know and love my fans - they are great guys. If they like what I do and come to my concerts, then we are on the same page. I really love pulling someone on stage or jumping into the crowd myself. Concerts are a kind of sex, an exchange of energy, and I want to merge with everyone who came and give pleasure to everyone.
Inspiration and shocking Taylor Momsen
If you are compared to other performers, for example, Courtney Love, do you take this as a compliment or an insult?
I don't know, I don't think about it. I just do what I like. Of course, I am inspired by some other musicians and what they do. But I don't try to imitate anyone - I think my fans understand that I do different things. I'm a completely different thing!
I heard that your idols as a child were The Beatles...
Yes, listening to their recordings, I began to imagine myself on stage, singing in front of a huge crowd. Thus the dream of a stage was born. I listened to the White Stripes and Jack White, then became interested in My Chemical Romance - there were many bands and musicians who influenced me. And yet, I hope that my band The Pretty Reckless and I managed to find something of our own, exactly what fans come to our concerts for.
Many people say that The Pretty Reckless is, first and foremost, Taylor Momsen. Not music and words, but your image, your voice, your crazy outfits and your charisma...
Well, I have it all together, I won’t argue! No matter how wonderful and charismatic you are and no matter what you put on yourself, if you write bad music, nothing will save you. I think that the drive and mood that we set with our songs mean just as much as how I look and how I behave on stage.
Taylor Momsen: 'Gossip Girl' Star Doesn't Like Gossip
You love very bold outfits not only on stage, but also in everyday life. Admit it - is this a tribute to the image, a way to stand out, to shock the audience? Or are you really comfortable walking around in underwear and stockings?
Yes, I like wearing stockings and I like how people react to it. I feel good in this look. Maybe when I'm 25 something will change, my butt will double in size or I'll just get tired of it and start wearing pantsuits. But for now I feel very organically this way.
You play one of the main roles in the cult TV series Gossip Girl. How do you feel about gossip? Do you like to discuss the latest news about friends and acquaintances with your girlfriends?
To be honest, I don’t like to gossip and I try not to pay attention to what they say and write about me. Gossip is still something dishonest; as a rule, it is lies and empty talk that people occupy themselves with because they have nothing to do. Of course, I like to communicate with friends, we often share news, but this cannot be called gossip. I’m not interested in prying into someone else’s life, especially if I’m not asked to do so.
Taylor, among your fans there are a lot of teenagers, very young girls and boys. What would you wish for them? What are you trying to convey to them with your creativity?
I would tell them to just be themselves. Not Taylor Momsen or anyone else, but himself. Don’t be shy and don’t be afraid to do what you want and be who you want. Never imitate anyone, because the best thing you can do is be yourself. And you are the best person you can be!
