BIOGRAPHY
Valentina Telichkina was born in the village of Krasnoye, Nizhny Novgorod region. She was the youngest child in a large family of a former dispossessed peasant. The parents faced many difficult trials, but they managed to survive. The father, who was sentenced to death, miraculously escaped punishment and started life almost from scratch - he got a job as a mechanic and built a new house for his family.
The girl grew up as a very active child, and from an early age she loved performing in public. “I just don’t remember myself not performing. As I was told, when I was two and a half or three years old, I sang a ditty in kindergarten. And then every matinee I was forced to repeat this performance. A little later, dancing was added to my “concert”; I famously danced “The Lady”. I remember there was no greater joy for me than performing at home in front of guests. Then I grew up and went to school. Amateur artistic activities began. They even entrusted me with leading three clubs: dance, drama and artistic expression,” recalls the actress.
After graduating from school, Valentina went to Moscow and entered VGIK (Vladimir Belokurov’s workshop) the first time, where she studied from 1963 to 1967.
Valentina Telichkina: biography of a star
The future star was born in 1945 in the Nizhny Novgorod region, becoming the seventh child for her parents. Her father was a wealthy man who had amassed capital even before the revolution, and therefore was persecuted by the Soviet regime. The family was deprived of property several times; its head was even threatened with execution at one time. All this happened before Valentina Telichkina was born, whose personal life and family many years later began to be of great interest to the press, so the details are not known.
By the time Valya was born, the large family was already living quite modestly. The girl’s mother worked as a salesman, her father abandoned a business that once brought him a good income (the production of felt boots), turning into an ordinary mechanic. Nevertheless, he always taught his children not to blame anyone for their failures and to remain loyal to their Motherland.
THEATER
After graduating from the institute, the actress was accepted into the troupe of the State Film Actor Theater. The actress says: “The two works that I did in the film actor’s theater were considered successful by critics. “Family” did not work out in the theater, although initially I dreamed of the stage and imagined myself only there. They say that theater is a family, and cinema is a team that gathers for several months. But you know, the theater may not turn out to be a family. It happens that this is most likely an illusion of family. Or maybe a terrarium. Most often this is what happens.”
Family joys
"Once Alone", 1974.
They were in no hurry to register their relationship. Before getting married, they lived in a civil marriage for several years. The unofficial status of the spouses brought some discomfort into their lives: they were not allowed to live together anywhere. They almost slept through their painting, they were so frivolous about the bureaucratic procedure. But they still made it to the registry office by the appointed time. Some of the actress’s colleagues believed that she was carrying the whole family on herself, but Valentina proudly reported that Vladimir was an architect, the real head and breadwinner of the family.

Soon the couple had a son, Ivan. The actress became a mother at the age of 35. Valentina Ivanovna never dreamed of a child, she did not feel a passionate desire to know the joy of motherhood. On the contrary, she was very afraid that the birth of a child would interfere with her artistic career. She was afraid of being forgotten. But everything changed the moment she held her son in her arms for the first time, experiencing both incredible tenderness and all-encompassing happiness.
MOVIE
Valentina Telichkina began acting after finishing her second year. In 1965, the aspiring actress played a small role in the film “Taiga Landing” directed by Vladimir Krasnopolsky and Valery Uskov. And two years later Telichkina played one of her most iconic roles - journalist Valya Korolkova in Sergei Gerasimov’s film “The Journalist”. The actress says about her heroine: “Valya is an incredibly funny girl, she really wanted to become a journalist and tried, despite the fact that “her epithets are rather poor.”
After her role in the film “The Journalist,” the young actress received offers from various directors. Telichkina is doomed to success. The main thing is to be able to take advantage of such luck.”
Valentina Telichkina's filmography includes more than 70 films. Viewers remember her for her roles in the films: “Zigzag of Fortune”, “The Beginning”, “Anna’s Happiness”, “It Can’t Be!”, “Five Evenings”, “Married for the First Time”, “Portrait of the Artist’s Wife”, “Where is the Nophelet? " The actress starred with Gaidai, Mikhalkov, Panfilov, Ryazanov and other famous directors. She refused many offers, which she never regretted.
"Love is not a potato"
In 2013, the Rossiya TV channel premiered the multi-part melodrama “Love is not a Potato,” where Valentina Telichkina played the role of the village woman Pani. According to the plot, she lived all her life in the village. The husband has died, and the only relative left is his nephew, who persuades Panya to move in with him. And all in order to sell a relative’s house and buy a car with the proceeds. Panya got tired of fighting back and jokingly said that she was getting married. Now she needs to find a real groom, otherwise her nephew will not lag behind...
The film also starred: Taisiya Vilkova, Marina Yakovleva, Alexander Mikhailov, Viktor Khorinyak and others.
"Big"
One of the actress’s last major works is Valery Todorovsky’s film “Bolshoi,” which premiered in April 2017. The plot centers on the story of a young dancer Yulia Olshanskaya. A girl from a small mining town is noticed by a former ballet dancer Pototsky (Alexander Domogarov), who predicts her future as a great ballerina. Yulia moves to Moscow and enters a ballet school. The girl has to learn that big ballet is not only about white tutus, gold boxes and the sliding of silk ribbons. But no obstacles will stop someone who has a Big Dream.
Valentina Telichkina played the role of Untilova, a ballet school teacher, in the film. The actress says about her heroine: “When I read the script of the film, I immediately realized that my heroine was a character from the film “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.” But I didn’t want her to be so sinister, and I told Valery Todorovsky about this. He suggested meeting with the current director of the school at the Bolshoi Theater. And I went to talk to her. I told the director about our conversation, and he made changes to the script.”
Valery Todorovsky managed to assemble a unique acting ensemble in the film. Valentina Telichkina’s partners were: Alisa Freindlikh, Alexander Domogarov, Igor Yasulovich and others.
Valentina Telichkina: “I regret that I gave birth to one child. I feel guilty"
Valentina Telichkina
On January 10, Valentina Telichkina celebrated her anniversary - the actress turned 75 years old. One of the first to congratulate the artist was Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. “Your charm and subtle sense of stage image, ability to transform, attract viewers of all generations. Your heroines are always sincere, bright and spontaneous natures. These are women who want to find their happiness and place in life and captivate with their spiritual beauty. And you deeply feel every image,” the politician said.
Medvedev added that Telichkina also became the author of surprisingly bright paintings that give an unforgettable experience. Note that Valentina Ivanovna is interested in painting. Several years ago, a forced professional lull drove the actress to depression. At the request of her son Ivan, the artist began to draw to decorate the house. This is how psychotherapy grew into a useful hobby. “I started drawing and it turned out that many of my friends also draw. We organized a club,” the celebrity shared.
40-year-old Ivan Gudkov supports his star mother in everything. The heir has long had his own family, but he still spends a lot of time with his parents. According to Telichkina, her son is her only support, because the actress has no other children.
“I regret that I gave birth to one child. Mom and dad had seven. I feel guilty because I could have raised three,” admitted Valentina Ivanovna.
Ivan Gudkov often visits his parents
A year after the birth of the heir, Telichkina signed with the child’s father, architect Vladimir Gudkov. Ivan did not follow in his parents' footsteps. The star heir graduated from MGIMO and got a job as a lawyer at Gazprom. “A woman’s happiness is having a family, mutual understanding with her husband, having children and grandchildren who bring joy. And this is also a favorite thing to do. I still work in cinema today with pleasure, I have the opportunity to choose material for which I am not ashamed,” said Valentina Ivanovna.
In 2014, the People's Artist of Russia became a grandmother - Ivan had a son. According to Telichkina, the boy was named Nikolai in honor of his two maternal and paternal great-grandfathers. The actress is sure that children should be called by names that were previously used in the family. Valentina Ivanovna also reveres St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, therefore, as the artist says, her grandson is a real gift for her.
Valentina Telichkina and Vladimir Gudkov have been together for more than 40 years
Valentina Ivanovna does not like to talk about life with her husband. According to the artist, even as a child she learned the saying “A fool praises his wife, smart parents.” The father explained to Telichkina that, while praising her husband, the wife offers the man to another who can take him away from the family.
“In family life, it is very important to respect the personality of the other. It was quite easy for me to respect my husband because he is a person. And he respected my personality. If he had shown his disrespect for me with claims, demands and criticism, then it would hardly have resulted in family happiness,” concluded Telichkina.
The difficult fate of Valentina Telichkina: early fame and painful anticipation of love
Valentina Ivanovna also hopes that Ivan will soon give her more grandchildren, because there is enough space in their big house for everyone.

INTERVIEW
About the roles
“I like all my roles. I love them not because they turned out well. Each of the roles is a certain part of life, getting to know the world around us, with people and partners. It’s more important for me not to play the role successfully, but to experience some difficult emotions.”
“I would not play anything that entails temptation or corruption. In any, even the most attractive form. I would not preach dubious values with my creativity. And I am glad that I manage to follow my principles. Even when I really needed money, I was able to refuse several roles that promised me a comfortable existence, but were very dubious in their spiritual meaning.”
About the filming process
“In the past, we would rehearse, warm up the stage, go to bed, and often at night amazing thoughts would arise. The horror of modern cinema is in haste, in vanity. All good things are born for a reason, but in pain. You need to sleep with the scene and the text. Otherwise, you end up with “talking heads.” The actors pronounce the texts, but don’t have time to get into the role - there’s no time. And modern actors are wonderful. Not to mention how many handsome men and beauties there are today!”
About the actor's personality
“Individuals are nurtured, not found. In addition, with omnivorous roles, it is impossible to preserve individuality. We know many examples when actors repeat themselves, and what was charming at 18 is strangely unpleasant at 45. I had a friend who admired everyone at the institute with her spontaneity, and when this happened at the age of 45, we all understood that she was simply playing at naivety, and this was a cliche. Individuality is made up of a person’s interests, preferences, tastes, and imitation is a terrible thing. Unfortunately, in theater universities today they often teach not individuality, but imitation and copying.”
On the state of Russian cinema
“I've read a few scripts lately. I noted with regret that in this genre the situation is quite difficult to change: there is a lot of waste paper, some kind of impersonal writing at the level of not even a secondary school, but an elementary school. It feels like the people who write the scripts simply haven’t read anything, haven’t experienced anything, haven’t felt anything. And almost nothing is designed for my age. And I really want to think about it, and the emotions haven’t been lost.”
About social events
“I sometimes go to film festivals, but parties are not my environment. Every person understands what excites him in life and what does not excite him. It doesn’t excite me at all.”

Little artist
As a child, actress Telichkina was a dreamer and a hooligan. Life seemed to her like an endless fairy tale, the heroine of which she imagined herself to be. In her dreams, she imagined herself as Cinderella, dreaming of an unexpected meeting with a handsome prince, the Frog Princess, shedding her skin, even the harmful Baba Yaga.
At just 2.5 years old, Valentina Telichkina first showed herself as a talented actress. The star's biography contains references to the fact that at this age she so amazed the teachers by declaring a ditty that it became her constant number at all matinees. A year later, the number was supplemented with dance; to the delight of the audience, little Valya danced “The Lady”. Of course, her family and family friends loved watching her performances.
Actress Valentina Telichkina managed to declare herself as a creative person at school. The girl was even entrusted with leading several circles, including a theater one. The future star acted as an actress, director and screenwriter, preparing concerts. Of course, she couldn’t help but have a dream to connect her life with the stage.

Anna's Happiness (1970)
Now the actress herself is surprised and admits that she would not have risked applying a second time if she had not passed the first time. But everything worked out well. The quiet beauty of a provincial girl with the talent of an actress and an unusual Nizhny Novgorod accent was quickly noticed.
Later she will tell you that Gerasimov himself gave her a start in life, inviting her to play one of the roles in his film “The Journalist.” This was Telichkina’s second appearance on the screen - her debut took place two years earlier, in “Taiga Landing.” But they noticed the actress only after working with Gerasimov.
An amazing manner of speaking, fragile beauty and a mop of soft hair scattered over her shoulders have become the calling card of the actress.
Some film critics even today see an imitation of her manners. For example, Telichkina’s melodious talk can be heard in the speech of Renata Litvinova. Valentina Ivanovna protests: Renata only somewhat resembles one of the heroines played by the actress - the same Valya Korolkova from “The Journalist.”
Then, in the USSR, having seen enough of an actress with a bright personality, the whole country began to dress and make up “like Telichkina.” The actress says that today, hurrying to the festival in Yalta, she took a taxi from the airport, and the driver admitted: he once got married only because the girl reminded her so much!
