Childhood

Valentina Mazunina was born on April 19, 1988 in the small town of Vereshchagino in the Perm Territory. Her father worked on the railroad, her mother worked in the city administration. She has an older sister, Evgenia, who is 5 years older, an emergency doctor.

The girls' parents always kept pets - rabbits, chickens, pigs, goats - and taught their children to care for them. But they managed to instill in their daughter not only hard work, but also a love of art. There was no theater in their city, so my mother periodically took her daughters to Perm.

Each trip was like a holiday: dressed-up little kids went to a performance that guaranteed an ocean of unforgettable emotions, constant delight and admiration (according to the actress, the only exception was the opera “Carmen,” which was difficult for a child to understand). Even the ballet, which was not entirely understandable at her age, she could watch for hours - she was fascinated by the music, costumes, and the atmosphere of celebration and magic. At school, Valya seriously studied Russian folk dancing, and in high school she began attending a theater studio with a friend. It was incredibly fun and interesting there. They staged, in particular, the play “The Adventures of Little Fool-Nyurochka,” where she got the important role of the Rat. At the same time, despite the fact that Valya was a very shy teenager, she first thought about the acting profession. After graduating from school, the girl entered the Perm Institute of Culture and Arts.

Along with studying acting at the course of People's Artist Mikhail Skomorokhov, her first performances on the stage of the Theater for Young Spectators, she began to earn extra money. Not because there was an urgent need for it. She simply believed that it was wrong to take money for entertainment or fashionable clothes from her parents, but that it was better to earn money on her own. During her student years, she managed to work as a counselor at a children's holiday camp, as a waitress in a cafe, and even as a worker at a confectionery factory.

Childhood and youth

Valya was born in April 1988 in Vereshchagino, 100 kilometers from Perm. At the time of her appearance, her father, a railway worker, and mother, an official of the city administration, were already raising their eldest daughter, Evgenia. The sister now lives in her hometown, works in an ambulance, and together with her husband, a programmer, is raising her son Sasha, the actress’s beloved nephew.

Mazunina’s love for the theater was instilled in her by her mother, who spared no time in going to Perm for the next premiere. For Valya, such trips were a real holiday. The girl fell in love with the stage. By nature modest and quiet, she joined a drama club with a friend and, as they say, got stuck.

After school, Valentina entered the Perm Institute of Culture in the acting department on her first try. During her studies, the girl, in order not to burden her parents, managed to work part-time as a packer in a factory, in a confectionery shop.

Carier start

In 2009, Valentina received higher education and became an actress at the Perm Youth Theater. She had the opportunity to play in such productions as “The Jolly Soldier” based on the story by Viktor Astafiev, “Home!..” based on the play by Lyudmila Razumovskaya, “Vaudeville Evening” based on the works of Alexander Shakhovsky, “The Estate” based on the comedy by Alexander Vampilov and others.

She spent part of the first large fee, 40 thousand, on the purchase of a beautiful beige windbreaker, and, like an exemplary daughter, sent the remaining amount to her parents. True, the strict father, seeing his daughter smoking on camera, was indignant - it took a long time to explain to him that such is the acting profession.

Further career

05/14/2018 Anna Polibentseva THR met with Valentina and talked about humor, diet and her upcoming anniversary.

In her heroine from “Real Boys,” who first appeared on the screen eight years ago, some recognized their friends, some recognized themselves, and the rest simply laughed with pleasure at the plump girl with a stern character and a Ural accent. And somehow everyone immediately fell in love with Valentina Mazunina - especially after the release of the popular hit “Gorko!” Today, the actress is one of the most in demand in the comedy genre: the film “Well, Hello, Oksana Sokolova!” has just been released, and “Night Shift” is coming out in June. THR caught up with Valentina to talk humor, diet and her upcoming anniversary.

Many comedians remember that they made everyone laugh from an early age. Was it the same for you?

I was a very modest child, and until high school there were no signs of trouble at all. I did everything I wanted, but never thought about the stage and, especially, about cinema. My parents are very simple and have nothing to do with the theater and cinema environment: my father is a railway worker, and my mother worked all her life in the city administration. I thought it would be about the same for me. Everything changed when, quite by chance, I went to a drama studio at school with a friend. At first it was hard: taking the first step, going out to the audience, interacting with others. And then I got so involved that I still haven’t let go.

When you decided to study to become an actress, did you think that comedy would be your bread and butter?

No, it just happened that way. I have certain psychophysical data and abilities to work in this genre. At the same time, I am open to new things: it is always interesting to leave my comfort zone and do something unusual - something that is difficult at first. But I will never give up comedy, because I really enjoy doing it.

Are they offering something out of your comfort zone?

Yes, a lot and completely different. They recently called for the second season of “Method” to play the role of a maniac woman who shoots suitors with a sniper rifle. When I was first invited, I called my agent back and asked: “Sasha, are they sure they didn’t make a mistake with the actress?” The director, meeting with me, said: “Well, shall we audition? Otherwise you’re all giggling and giggling.” They didn’t approve me, but they reassured me that they really liked me and invited me to audition for another character.

And yet you have experience in serious cinema. In "Arrhythmia", for example...

An amazing story happened to her. I was in Vereshchagino (Valentina’s hometown in the Perm region - THR) when the agent called and said: “Valya, you need to do the tests yourself...” And added: “... For Khlebnikov.” I was taken aback. Firstly, because such a director is calling me. And, secondly, because my parents don’t even know how to hold an iPhone in their hands - how will they take pictures? In general, I got ready, sat down to study the text, and realized that there was almost no need to depict anything - lie down, speak calmly and that’s all. I gave my mother the phone number, and already on the second take she couldn’t stand it: “It says there that your stomach hurts, why aren’t you playing anything?” (Laughs) In the end, we sent everything, and the next morning I was approved.

In March, the film “Well, Hello, Oksana Sokolova!”, based on the short film of the same name, was released. What was it like to immerse yourself in this story again?

I was very happy when the director of the film, Kirill Vasiliev, called and said that we would shoot a full-length film. But it turned out that remaking the same material is very difficult. It's good that there were still a lot of fresh scenes.

Has the comedy Night Shift, which comes out in June, become something unusual for you?

This is a cool story about a simple guy (played by Vladimir Yaglych - THR), forced to leave the factory for a strip club for money. And I played a kind girl, sincerely in love with him, who is trying with all her might to help, despite the fact that he is married. But who has ever bothered with this if there are strong feelings? (Smiles)

Usually you play catchy laughers who can lash out sharply if necessary. Is it the same in life?

I admit, I lack some character traits of my heroines: determination, categorical choice, courage, straightforwardness. I’m also very suspicious - I can make a catastrophe out of anything.

How are you with self-irony?

Everything is fine with her. She saves in many situations. I really like people with a sense of humor - those who don’t mind laughing at themselves. Our world is so complex that if you don’t laugh, it’s time to cry. But, I must say, with age I began to take life more seriously, without carelessness and immaturity, as before. I'm getting old, I guess. (Laughs)

By the way, you are celebrating your 30th anniversary soon. Does age mean something to you, or is it just a number?

That's horrible! This is the first time this has happened to me: I’m very sad and grieving. I used to think that this was just talk, nothing special would happen, but now this figure just hangs over me! Despite the fact that I feel very young. Friends ask: “Well, Valya, how are we celebrating?” I say: “No way. I’ll sit at home all day, eat cake and drink white wine.” But in reality, we will celebrate, of course. I hope when I turn 30, everything will fall into place - at least until 40.

Since you're talking about cakes, I can't help but notice how much weight you've lost. Aren't you afraid that your fans won't accept you in your new image?

I treat myself adequately and understand that I’m not thin even now. Look, those cheeks are full of ammunition. (Laughs) But at my current weight I’m comfortable, and it would be stupid to give up harmony with my body for fear that I won’t be filmed. She gained a lot of weight when she moved to Moscow - she was constantly eating and crying. Then I looked at myself in “Bitter!” and thought: “Christmas trees, spread wider across yourself!” But I didn’t feel like that, I’m still a pussy inside.

Don't you feel like it's time to leave your debut - the series "Real Boys" - and move on?

“Real Boys” is my first and most favorite project, it is already an integral part of my life. The guys have become my family, and I’m not going to give it up, because without them it will be very difficult. So we will continue filming in the summer.
