— Have you studied your ancestry, where did it come from?

— It has nothing to do with Zaporozhye as such. It just happened that way. Even my dad, when he served in the army, can you imagine, ended up in Georgia, in Gori, in the Zaporozhye tank regiment. Fate.

- But your fate was predetermined from childhood. Dad is a film actor and theater figure, mother is an associate professor at the Shchepkinsky department...

-...Yes, unfortunately, it was so. Although I made some attempts to go my own way, this turned out to be not enough. I went as usual.

-What did you want to do?

— I wanted to study psychology. But I can’t say that I’ve come far from this. So I don’t consider time wasted. It seems to me that our profession is very connected with psychology, as, in principle, many others.

— Have you studied specialized literature on psychology?

— I read books, studied all sorts of methods. But I didn't like a lot of things. It seemed that everything should be more humane, but there was a rather cynical approach. Even now, listening to many psychologists, I understand that all their speeches are repulsive.

— You started acting even before GITIS in “Sins of the Fathers”, then followed by “My Fair Nanny”, “Kulagin and Partners”, “Rublyovka Live”. What do you consider the main starting point into the big world of cinema?

— I am mainly a serial artist. I don't have enough full meters. Therefore, I don’t consider myself a big cinema figure. Some kind of texture, clear psychophysics, not repulsive, I can remember the words, do what they ask. Apparently, this is where we agree with the directors.

— Do you agree with film critics who wrote that fame came to you with the role of hockey player Dmitry Shchukin in the TV series “Molodezhka”?

— She came to all of us after this series. This is not some opinion of film critics, but stern objectivity.

— How did you feel this for yourself?

— Strangers started writing and calling. The film company and TV channel began taking us on press tours, presenting the project in different cities. I then thought: “Wow! This is the scope. I’ve never had anything like this.” And then, I see, the second season, the third - oh-oh, off we go, like Pinocchio.

— Was it tiring or did you revel in it?

— It was fun at first. But the question arose, what next? I’m generally not very close to family squabbles and relationships between teenagers on screen. Before the first season, we didn’t know why we were pouring sweat and blood, everyone was fighting for the idea. And later it became clear to me that the project was not developing in a direction that was interesting to me. And I decided to call it a day, fortunately there was an alternative, which appeared, by the way, thanks to the same Molodezhka. In any case, this is an invaluable experience working with cool professionals, very useful!

— After this series, Gloss gave you the title of sex symbol, wasn’t it hard to carry this load?

- Oh, it's hard. It seems to me that I have lost everything, all my sex. (Laughs.) Just kidding. I think they assign it to everyone. This has nothing to do with the truth. They awarded this title to each participant in the Molodezhka series. After all, these are young boys who can be covered up, dressed up, and it will be great.

— When you find out that a big star is in the project, do you feel jittery?

- I’m already 30 years old, what a thrill, what a star, I beg you. If I were a boy, I would probably test it, now I already understand who the real star is.

— In that case, what do you remember about working with Hollywood star Jennifer Lawrence in the spy thriller “Red Sparrow”?

“It seems to many that Hollywood, especially when it is hidden behind a curtain from many of the world’s actors, is something incredible, unrestrained, delightful and amazing, a real actor’s paradise. But when the curtain lifted for me, many things became clearer. Of course, there are a lot of differences in equipment and resources. And on all fronts: material, technical, temporary. They have completely different dimensions. When we need to squeeze in financially, then with them, if you don’t grow up, they won’t even sign a budget for you.

— And Jennifer Lawrence herself?

- In my opinion, Jennifer has become the highest paid actress in Hollywood today, because she is simply a fanatic of our profession! She closes four projects a year as an actress. Then she writes something, produces, plans to film, she has advertising contracts. Plus, she is very young, mentally and physically healthy, so she can afford to work and earn so much. Any normal person, it seems to me, would have grunted long ago. Meryl Streep could also probably earn that much, but she just doesn’t need it. And here, apparently, it’s young and fun, and why not? As they say, dance while you're young. And as a person, she is simply the life of the party. You can sit it in a circle of friends, and you won’t be bored for a second. She jokes and laughs all the time, she is very cheerful. On the set, when we worked with her, no special America was revealed: a good, technical partner is a great success.

— After watching her enough, you apparently decided to act in a new capacity as a producer?

— Everyone says: producer, but I don’t understand what’s unknown here? So you and I want to buy an apartment. We do everything to get the one we need. And then we renovate and move into it to live. It's the same with producing. My friend and partner Benik Arakelyan and I wanted to do something of our own, interesting. What we think is missing. And they did theirs and theirs. What we like.

— What attracted you to the project?

— I really liked it in Armenia. And next to you is your friend Benik, with whom you have been inseparable for a long time. And he has a living story from first-hand experience. When we plunged deeply into all this, we saw not picturesque panoramic mountains and sunsets - there were other aromas around us, a different life, a real one. I am not a country person, so everything was exotic for me. I couldn’t help but get hooked on it and try to present everything in an artistic way and make a story out of it. But I wanted to make a film starring silence. So that all questions exist in the air. Sokurov has several works in this vein, although this is perhaps an immodest comparison. But the viewer thinks and talks to himself more than the author. I wanted this. There are many silent scenes: people eat, watch, it would seem that nothing is happening. But there is a big meaning behind it all.

— Two actors in the family, meaning your wife Ekaterina Smirnova, are these big difficulties or advantages for you?

“Before, I didn’t care.” Now I want us to talk about something other than profession, so that we don’t know what’s going on at the center of Polyakov, Pankov, what Grymov staged and how we feel about it. I’ve played enough of it all—my love for the profession. What remained was just love, not even for the profession, but for life in general. I would like to embrace it all, not limit myself to one theater. But I would love my wife even if she wasn't an actress.

— Were you okay with the fact that Catherine decided to keep her maiden name after the wedding?

- Of course not. She can even come up with a third one, that’s her business.

—Are you similar in character or different?

- We are completely different. We have completely different points of view on everything. But patience and work will grind everything down.

— Katyusha doesn’t really act in films. But if you let her go to the theater, then she will drown there, she will work on everything in a row, endlessly. While we had one daughter, Alexandra, we worked on a shift basis. We agreed on who would stay. And now, if I have a lot of work, then the question does not arise about who will be with the youngest, Elizabeth. Of course, mom. But I already dream of taking my children with me and being with them at work. And Katya is still worried that they will feel uncomfortable there and that they will get sick. Wait and see.

— The youngest, Elizabeth, probably makes everyone happy, since she is that age, but what is it about the older one that delights you?

- She's just a bomb. And not slow at all. This is a photon charge. As Gorinshtein wrote, if there are children at home, then this is some kind of eternal philosophical carnival. Sometimes I ask the eldest: “Al, what kind of house is this?” And this is the maternity hospital that we recently approached to wave to my mother. She says: “This is the Motherland!” And this is truly her homeland. And it will remain like that for her for the rest of her life: an alley, a house and a black fence. And all thoughts are like that. Very fun and interesting.

I think the accountant’s daughter would also not neglect an artificial braid. Everything can still change your mind, change. And to such an extent that we cannot even imagine now.
