Biography
Shamil Khamatov has long gotten rid of the fear of constant comparison with his sister, People's Artist of Russia Chulpan Khamatova.
“There was a time when I was a little worried about this, but now I know that it is absolutely pointless. It's not my problem. If people want to compare, that’s their right, I can’t stop them in any way. I’m doing my own thing—a job that I absolutely love.”
Childhood and youth
Shamil Nailyevich Khamatov was born into a family where the parents had nothing to do with creativity. Father and mother are engineers. And yet, two of the three children are actors.
Shamil Khamatov
In the Khamatov family, the birth of a son was perceived as a real holiday, because before this there had been girls. Shamil grew up as an ordinary boy. As a child, he did not show any particular inclination towards art. He loved to play football and played water polo, and “swimmed” to become a candidate for master of sports. After school, he planned to study to become a lawyer or historian; his parents saw an energy specialist in their son.
Shamil Khamatov’s dream of becoming an artist appeared after a trip to visit his sister Chulpan in Moscow. He first showed interest in this profession after seeing the film “Country of the Deaf” by Valery Todorovsky, where his sister starred in the title role.
Shamil Khamatov and Chulpan Khamatova in childhood
The day when Shamil saw Chulpan in the image of Patricia on the Sovremennik stage in the production of “Three Comrades” turned out to be a turning point in his fate. The impression from his sister’s performance and from the general atmosphere of the theater was so strong that the guy also decided that he would be an artist.
After graduating from school, Khamatov went to the capital, where, like his sister, he studied at the Russian Academy of Theater Arts, and with the same teacher, Alexei Borodin.
Shamil Khamatov: on the road to his own name
A young, attractive and not devoid of talent actor cannot stand it if they begin to compare him with his older sister: they say, the bright star Chulpan illuminated the path to the stage and cinema for Shamil Khamatova.
Indeed, in such cases it is difficult to get rid of the temptation to draw analogies, because Shamil even tried to get his acting education at RATI - the same university that his famous sister once graduated from. What is it - the habit of imitating, the habit of keeping up, or the habit of listening to the advice of elders? Of course, in some ways the example of his older sister turned out to be terribly infectious for Shamil Khamatov. When the current Honored Artist of Russia, Chulpan Khamatova, managed to make her debut in Valery Todorovsky’s “Country of the Deaf,” her younger brother was barely thirteen. But for some reason, even at that time he was firmly convinced that he would never leave Chulpan behind. And although many opportunities for self-realization opened up for the young man, after some hesitation he still chose the art of transformation. Shamil most often refuses journalists asking him for an interview. And if he agrees, then only on one condition: everything related to Chulpan is a closed topic. No, there is no personal enmity between brother and sister, they have an excellent relationship. It’s just that Shamil set a goal for himself from the very beginning: to make people perceive himself not as a “relative of the star,” but as an individual. “It’s too early for me to tell everyone about my relationship with an actress who has reached heights in her profession. I want to earn my own name,” he says and tries not to change this credo.
Love the "crocodile"
Almost all romantically minded Russian young ladies fell for Shamil Khamatov after he starred in Elier Ishmukhamedov’s film “The Bride” in 2006 - a beautiful and kind fairy tale with an unrealistic ending. In this film he plays the role of a young man named Sasha, who almost died in Chechnya, but survived in order to make his beloved girl happy. “The Bride” brought Khamatov real popularity, and after its next broadcast on any of the channels, the actor’s fans leave hundreds and thousands of emotional posts on forums on the Internet.
Shamil Khamatov has a girlfriend. He prefers not to mention her name, but carefully hints that she is also an actress. The couple lives in a civil marriage. Is civil marriage just cliches?, and Khamatov does not exclude the possibility of having a real wedding with his chosen one in the future. He claims that he has already “grown up” from the age when “model” beauties seem the most attractive. “But at some point I suddenly realized that the outer shell rarely corresponds to the inner content. It seems to me that I could fall in love with the “crocodile” because I already understood: the most important thing in a person is the soul,” admits the actor.
His hero Ruslan makes a similar discovery for himself in Felix Gerchikov’s comedy “Pickup. “Eating without rules”, filmed in 2009. After all his cynical adventures with the most seemingly unapproachable beauties, he falls in love with a girl with an ordinary, “gray” appearance, appreciating her spiritual qualities.
Challenging indifference
Where Shamil Khamatov absolutely does not seek to “copy” his sister is in charitable activities. Chulpan Khamatova, as you know, was at the origins of the organization of the Gift of Life charity foundation, through which many children with severe cancer receive a chance for full health. Shamil, unlike her, is not inclined to such humanistic actions. He tells how he tried several times to help people financially and at the same time became a godsend for all kinds of swindlers. According to him, the growth of lack of spirituality among his compatriots is not at all conducive to good endeavors. Shamil Khamatov decided to fight the moral degradation of society in his own way: he dreams of playing the role of Lermontov’s Pechorin and showing the worthlessness of “heroes of our time.” For an actor, characters of this kind evoke both pity and a feeling of hostility at the same time, but from a professional point of view they are interesting to him as a psychological type and a symbol of cynicism and indifference.
But directors, apparently, are inclined to see in Shamil Khamatov not Pechorin at all, but a much more positive image - at least the programmer Andrei from the M8 Highway. Director Alexander Grabar plans to release this romantic and adventure-filled story before the end of 2010. In addition, around the same time, viewers will see Shamil Khamatov in Alexander Gornovsky’s film “The Fifth Blood Group.”

Shamil Khamatov is a popular Russian actor , born on January 29, 1985 in the city of Kazan. The appearance of a son in the Khamatov family was a truly significant event, since previously only girls were born in their family. Shamil’s childhood was the most ordinary: he loved to misbehave, like most of his peers, he could catch fish from an aquarium or throw garbage into his sister’s briefcase.
When the boy was six years old, his older sister, and now a famous actress, Chulpan Khamatova, went to Moscow to enter theater school. After she played in the film “Country of the Deaf” directed by Valery Todorovsky, the whole country learned about her. At that time, Shamil was already thirteen.
Until a certain point, Shamil did not show a clear attraction to acting. He seriously practiced water polo, was interested in history, and intended to enroll in law school. From time to time he traveled to Moscow, where he attended performances with the participation of his sister. Gradually, he began to be overcome by thoughts that he, too, could one day stand on stage like this as an actor. In the end, this thought consumed his entire consciousness.
Khamatov came to Moscow with one single goal: to become a student at the Russian Academy of Theater Arts, like his sister Chulpan. The curator of his course was A.V. Borodin. During his student years, he performed on the stage of RAMT, where he continued his activities after graduation. Shamil’s participation could be observed in such performances: “Lord of the Flies”, “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”.
Shamil graduated from the Academy in 2005. His diploma works were the roles of Petrushka and Manilov in Gogol's Dead Souls.
After completing his studies, Khamatov worked in the troupe of the Sovremennik Theater. On the stage of this theater, Shamil’s debut took place in the play “The Naked Pioneer,” where he appeared before the audience in the image of Sevka Goryaev. His subsequent works were: “Antony & Cleopatra. Version", "Five Evenings", "Hurdy Organ", a new version of "Three Sisters" by Chekhov and others.
Shamil Khamatov’s first film work was the comedy parable “Wonderful Valley” directed by Rano Kubaeva, where he starred in the role of a young man named Sandor. Immediately after this, the actor starred as a football player in the series “Team”, then in the series “Emergency-2” as Alik.
Shamil became truly famous after the release of a melodrama called “The Bride” (2006) directed by Elier Ishmukhamedov. The plot of the film reveals a romantic love story, in which the actor starred in the leading role of Sasha Malyavkin. Khamatov’s hero voluntarily goes to Chechnya, where military operations are taking place, and almost dies there. However, neither his relatives nor the girl who is in love with him know that he survived. This picture was a brilliant success, primarily among the female half of the public. In an instant, Shamil acquired a whole army of fans.
A very similar plot is observed in the series called “And yet I love...” (2008), in the filming of which Shamil Khamatov also participated. Here again his hero, a sweet and smart young man Zhenya, goes to war in the same place, in Chechnya, leaving his beloved girl in his homeland. As in the film “The Bride,” the protagonist’s girlfriend receives false news about the death of her loved one. The topic of Chechnya was also touched upon in the military drama “The Dead Field” by Alexander Aravin, where Khamatov played a minor role.
The pictures that were already left behind created for the young actor the image of a courageous and at the same time charming person, which had a positive effect on Shamil’s popularity, especially among young people. For the same age category, the comedy crime film “M8 Highway” (2008) was also shot, where Shamil Khamatov starred as a programmer named Andrei. In the plot of this picture you won’t see anything: chases, adventures, a “super agent”, investigations, a distraught politician, a music lover gangster, stoned bikers...
Another youth film, the melodrama “Pickup: Eating Without Rules” (2009), tells the story of a young seducer Ruslan Nikitin (Shamil Khamatov), who competed with his friend Andrei Korobov (Konstantin Kryukov) in the field of seducing the fairer sex. But Khamatov’s hero, unlike Korobov, is inclined to show true love...
latest works include roles in the TV series “The Fifth Blood Type” and “Bodyguard 3.”

A comedy called “Route M8” cemented the heroic image of Shamil. In the film, he played a fearless and resourceful programmer who gets into incredible troubles and hides from pursuit.
The artist was seen in a slightly different role in the comedy film “Pickup: Shooting Without Rules.” But in the melodramas with action elements “The Fifth Blood Type”, “Bodyguard-3” and “Survive After”, fans and especially fans of Shamil again saw their favorite artist the way they loved him: a romantic and courageous hero.

When the artist was asked how immersed he was in Internet technologies, Shamil replied that he only uses Facebook because there is a lot of interesting news and people there. However, Khamatov later began publishing photos on Instagram.
Shamil Khamatov with his sister
Chulpan Khamatova once said about her brother:
“I evaluate Shamil by the standard that I have set for myself, and sometimes I am very biased towards him. Because I want my own, dear one, to be the best. I know: if anything happens, my modest, generous, kind, warm and slightly stubborn brother will come and deal with all the offenders and problems. I’m happy that I have such a dear person.”
On the stage of Sovremennik and roles in films
As the actor himself said in an interview for the Kultura TV channel, the fear of comparison with his famous sister, Chulpan Khamatova, of course, occupied his thoughts, but for a very, very short time. Having received a diploma from RATI in 2005, Shamil also entered Sovremennik and soon realized that the stage is a place where everyone gets the opportunity to share their unique inner light, which simply cannot be similar or dissimilar to the inner light of someone else.

In the comedy melodrama “The Toy Seller,” the young artist had the rare luck of meeting one of the most beloved foreign actors by Russians, Pierre Richard. “I would like to believe that I learned something from him,” Hamil admired the Frenchman, upset that it was not possible to communicate outside the work site: he does not speak French, and Pierre does not know English very well. Personal life
The personal life of Shamil Khamatov was closed from prying eyes for a long time. The artist did not tell any details to journalists and did not appear with his chosen one almost anywhere. Shamil once told especially meticulous representatives of the press that he lives in a civil marriage with the woman he loves. But he didn’t mention her name because he was “afraid to jinx it.”
In the summer of 2010, Shamil married the daughter of Lenkom star Vladimir Belousov, actress and Sovremennik colleague Daria Belousova. The wedding was celebrated twice - in the groom’s native Kazan and within the walls of the theater. The Sovremennik troupe congratulated the couple with a skit cake invented specially for this occasion, and the imprisoned parents were Galina Volchek and Igor Kvasha.
Shamil Khamatov with his wife Daria Belousova
The wife is 2 years older than Shamil and is familiar to the viewer from her role as a hilarious seamstress in Andron Konchalovsky’s film “Gloss”, and also as the lover Mishina in the TV series “Sweet Life-2”. Dasha did not take her husband’s last name, because three Khamatovs in one theater is too much. But the children will undoubtedly be Khamatovs.
According to rumors, before meeting his wife, back in Kazan, Shamil had a romantic relationship with a girl, Regina. The young people separated when Khamatov left for Moscow. In the capital, the guy fell in love with fellow student Yana Kalinina. The actress subsequently starred in the films “One Family”, “Don’t Be Born Beautiful”, “Soldiers”. This relationship ended after 2 years.

Shamil describes himself as a non-communicative person, so he chooses the former between theater and cinema. In the temple of art it is more interesting and responsible, there is constant movement, there is a team charged with one goal, on each member of which you can rely. But I acted in a movie and immediately forgot about it.

Another film almanac in the actor’s collection is the film “Selfie #Selfi”. The film should not be confused with the thriller by Nikolai Khomeriki with the participation of Konstantin Khabensky. The film by Maxim Boev tells stories about how the craze for filming oneself with gadgets can change lives.
The director prescribed roles in the adventure film “I Am Love” specifically for Shamil Khamatov, Daria Belousova and Igor Petrenko. Shamil played a journalist who, in search of sensational material, turns to a company that sells feelings of love, and becomes a victim of attackers.

Shamil Khamatov: “I tried to manipulate the actresses very carefully”
Photo: Ksenia Naumova. Interview: Denis Merezhkovsky
GRAZIA: How relevant is the performance, which is based on the poem “Ruslan and Lyudmila”, published 198 years ago?
Shamil Khamatov: We tried to raise the topic of indifference in society. Today, few things are horrifying - you can kill a person, show it on TV, and you will watch and continue to chew your salad. But first of all, the theme of love is eternal.
You defined the genre of “Bedtime Stories” as fantasy. What remains of Pushkin on stage, and what is a figment of your imagination?
The most important thing that has been preserved is the line of Ruslan and Lyudmila. I really wanted to tell a story about love. We did not set internal boundaries - on the contrary, we approached the material rather irresponsibly and observed how choreography, modern music, and different meanings interact with the word.
However, all the performers are girls. Why?
It's just that all the guys were busy in other performances. (Laughs.) At first I was even a little upset, but then I thought that it could turn out interesting... Three actresses-heroines, such a “holy trinity”, and three dancers - sexless creatures from the other world, ghosts.
What was it like working in a women's company? Mostly girls are involved in your production.
Yes, many have already joked about this topic. It was a bit difficult. Still, the guys are able to smooth out some corners in their work. “Fairy Tale” is my first directorial work, and I had to learn to find an approach to each and try not to offend. We had to look for workarounds and very carefully manipulate the actresses.
What kind of director did you end up becoming? Despot or friend?
Both. As an actor, I understand perfectly well that if they can’t explain something to you, it’s terrible. Therefore, the primary task for me is to arrange it so that the artist is comfortable. If he begins to resist, without at the same time offering his own solutions, I can turn on the boss and ask him to do it my way.
That is, you are attentive to other people's suggestions?
Always. It is important that there is a dialogue between the director and the actors while working. And in this sense I am very open.
By the way, how did you perceive the opinions of those who did not like “Bedtime Story”?
It’s normal, I always listen to criticism on the matter. But I understand perfectly well that Pushkin is “not a saint” - if you read the reviews of “Ruslan and Lyudmila” of that time, you will see: they left no stone unturned on the poem.
Are there any plans to put on anything else?
Yes, I really liked it. The process of creating a performance causes crazy adrenaline - you get up in the morning thinking about it and go to bed in the evening. This is a constant desire to express your inner position. And if it works, it really tickles your nerves in a good way.
